A REVIEW ON UNANI TRADITIONAL USES OF SAMBHALU IN FEMALES AS WELL AS PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
AbstractHerbal medicine, rather than merely curing a particular disease, aims at returning the body back to its natural state of health. Vitex negundo Linn. known as Sambhalu in Unani medicine belongs to family Verbenaceae. It is a large aromatic shrub distributed throughout India. It has been used since ancient times as a female remedy in Unani medicine. It is a well known plant because of its two main properties i.e. its use in female disorders specially disorders linked with female reproductive system and decreasing sexual desire. It is also used in other problems like roots and leaves used in eczema, ringworm and other skin diseases, liver disorders, spleen enlargement, rheumatic pain, gout, abscess, backache; seeds used as vermicide. It is also used to control population. This review is an attempt to highlight its therapeutic uses especially in females mentioned in Unani medicine as well as phytochemical and pharmacological properties
