EFFECT OF TRICHOSANTHES DIOICA AQUEOUS FRUIT EXTRACT IN DIABETES AND DIABETIC COMPLICATIONS
AbstractAnti-diabetic and protective activity of T. dioica aqueous extract in diabetic complications in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was evaluated. Albino rats (n = 24) were divided into four groups, of six animals each. Group 1 (normal control) and Group 2 (diabetic control) received normal saline (10 ml/kg/day p.o.) whereas Group 3 (Standard, insulin 6 U/kg/day s.c) and Group 4 received 1000 mg/kg/day p.o. of T. dioica extract for 28 days. Extract treated animals showed significant decrease in various biochemical parameters like blood glucose, SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, urea, LDL, Cholesterol and glycated hemoglobin. Extract was also effective in diabetic complications like neuropathy and learning and memory dysfunction evaluated by behavioral models like elevated plus maze, object recognition, open field test, rotarod, hot plate, tail flick, immersion in hot and cold water etc. It can be concluded that T. dioica possess significant anti-diabetic and protective activity in diabetic complications in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
