Mesenchymal stem cells are a small number of undifferentiated cells located in various tissues of the body. They have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into lineages of mesenchymal origin. They serve as most promising candidates for various regenerative medicine and tissue engineering applications. Their use in various clinical applications depend on their proliferative capacity to expand cell population. One of the key challenge to expansion is decline in proliferation and differentiation capacity of cells isolated from older individuals. In the present study, we have compared cellular characteristics of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells isolated from young (4 – 6 weeks age) and old (60-64 weeks age) rats. Cyclea peltata (Lam), belonging to the family Menispermaceae, is a common plant in South India. It is mentioned in Ayurvedic classics by Rajapatha and is one of the important drugs used in Ayurveda therapeutics and is used widely in different formulations in medical practice. Plants present in the mangrove ecosystem are underexplored for their natural bioactive agents, including a neglected scope of inventing newer antimicrobials, to combat global crisis mediated by MDR microorganisms. In this study, we investigated four plants-Excoecaria agallocha, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Avicennia alba and Aegialitis rotundifolia of the Sundarbans, world’s largest mangrove ecosystem in West Bengal, India, for their antimicrobial activities against Salmonella typhi and Candida parapsilosis, in addition to their important bioactive resources including antioxidants. Ethanolic, methanolic, and DMSO extracts of leaves of these plants were studied by antimicrobial screening, determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, ABTS [2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), lipid peroxidation inhibition, thin layer chromatography, and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS). E. agallocha extracts showed excellent antimicrobial activities against S. typhi, while antifungal activity against C. parapsilosis was almost lacking. Triazole is a diunsaturated heterocyclic compound that contains two nitrogen groups as heteroatoms. In the present study, an attempt was made to synthesize various derivatives of substituted 1, 2, 4-triazol-3-yl) benzene-1-ol and assess their antimicrobial efficiency. The synthesized compounds were subjected to physical characterization and spectral analysis by IR and NMR for structure elucidation. The compounds were then subjected to evaluation of antimicrobial activity against bacterial strains Escherichia coli (Gram -ve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram -ve), Bacillus Subtili (Gram +ve), Staphylococcus aureus (Gram +ve) method using ciprofloxacin as standard and against fungal strain Aspergillus niger method using fluconazole as standard.
