Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) studies play an important role in isolation and identification of phytocompounds. Since, the chemical composition of the plants usually determines its biological activity, phytochemicals of possible pharmaceutical importance can be subjected to a detailed analysis. The present study is concerned with the GC-MS analysis of chloroform extract of the bark of Terminalia travancorensis, an evergreen tree, endemic to the Western Ghats. Reports on the benefits and or medicinal properties of T. travancorensis are rare or even absent. In this context, the present study was carried out to determine the chemical constituents of the bark by GC-MS analysis. Twenty two components were identified by GC-MS analysis in the chloroform extract. The major components detected were Friedelan-3-one (15.93%), gamma-sitosterol (10.48%), alpha -octadecene (8.54%), n-Tetracosanol-1 (8.21%), Phenol, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) (7.77%), 1-Nonadecene (7.49%), Heptacosanol (6.16%), 1-Heptadecene (5.25%) and stigmast-4-en-3-one (5.46 %). Friedelan-3-one, the major compound is a triterpenoid possessing antifeedant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial and anticandidal activities. The second major compound, gamma-sitosterol plays a vital role in the structure and...

Objective: This study aims to formulate novel dorzolamide hydrochloride and timolol maleate ocuserts to enhance patient compliance through providing controlled drugs release from polymeric matrix. Methods: Ocuserts were prepared by solvent-casting method using different polymers Ethyl Cellulose, Eudragit S100 and Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose in different ratios. The prepared ocusters were physcochemichally evaluated for their weight, thickness, drug content uniformity, surface pH, Swelling Index (SI) and folding endurance. In-vitro drug release was studied from the prepared formulas and the results were analyzed by drug release kinetic models. The ocuserts stability after three month’s storage at 40 ±0.5oC and 75 ±5% RH was estimated. In-vivo tests were done to study the release profile and estimate the safety of the incorporated drugs in rabbits’ eyes. Results: The prepared ocuserts show uniform weight, thickness and drug content. Their surface pH was in the physiological range and showed acceptable folding endurance. HPMC Formulas had higher SI values. Results of in-vivo testing for one of the prepared ocuserts shows slow release of both drugs...

Eriosema psoraleoides leaves have been reported to be used in traditional African medicine to treat cuts and wounds, hence the present investigation of its antibacterial activity using the agar pour plate method. The leaves contain tannins and flavonoids. A methanol extract was obtained from the leaves by maceration, and then the n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions were obtained from this. Statistical analysis of data was by ANOVA, with p<0.05 considered significant. The methanol extract, n-hexane fraction and ethyl acetate fraction were found active against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Staphylococcus aureus Clinical isolate; in addition, the methanol extract was active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, Staphylococcus aureus Clinical isolate was found resistant to Gentamicin. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) of the extract and fractions against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC and against Staphylococcus aureus Clinical isolate, showed that ethyl acetate fraction was more active than the other two fractions. Although Staphylococcus aureus was found to be resistant to Gentamicin, it was susceptible to the antibacterial activity of the methanol extract, n-hexane fraction,...

Tenofovirdisoproxilfumarate (TDF) is an essential component of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV infection used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Type-1 patients. A stability-indicating HPLC method for the determination of TDF in solid-lipid nanoparticles was developed and validated. Chromatographic analysis was performed in a Agilent 1260 Infinity series, equipped with Waters Reliant™ C18 column, (USA) (250mm long, 4.6mm internal diameter, particle size 5µm), using a mobile phase composed of an aqueous phase (20mM KH2PO4) pH 2.4 and acetonitrile in the (50:50) ratio, at 1.0ml/min flow rate and injection volume of 20μl. Under the conditions established, the method demonstrated to be specific, without interference from formulation excipients, stability- indicating, linear (r2 = 0.9977) in the concentration range of 10.0 to 60.0μg/ml, precise (RSD=0.462), accurate (99.12%-100.76% of mean recovery) and robust. The TDF sample showed degradation under acid, base, oxidative, photolytic and dry heat stress conditions. The drug content of the solid lipid nanoparticle formulation when analyzed by the proposed method was found to be...

Colonization of bacteria causes various diseases of oral cavity such as plaque and gingivitis. Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species are the most important pathogens causing dental caries. The present study was designed to screen the anti bacterial action of four different marketed mouth washes namely Listerine zero, Colgate plax, Signal expert protection and Aloe dent against selected human pathogenic strains Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. All the brands of mouth wash demonstrated an excellent spectrum of activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In this study the antibacterial action of Listerine zero was significant when compared to Colgate plax against Staphylococcus aureus at P < 0.05 level. However, the spectrum of action of Colgate plax was extremely significant against Bacillus subtilis at P< 0.001 level when compared to rest of mouthwashes screened. The spectrum of activity varied with brands of mouth washes screened against organisms. This study demonstrated that all the brands of mouth washes revealed good anti bacterial...
