ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF STEM BARK OF TECOMA STANS (L.) JUSS. EX KUNTH AND ESTIMATION OF GALLIC ACID
AbstractTecoma stans is a well-known traditional plant in India. The plant can be used in diabetes, digestive problems, and rheumatism and as antimicrobial. The aim of the study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts of the stem bark of Tecoma stans (L.) by in-vitro and in-vivo methods. Ethyl acetate and alcoholic extract showed better anti-inflammatory activity by Human red blood cell membrane stabilization method. These extracts were also found to have significant inhibition to the carrageenan induced rat paw oedema. The gallic acid, a phenolic acid identified in the ethyl acetate fraction may contribute to the anti-inflammatory activity. The amount of gallic acid present in the ethyl acetate fraction of Tecoma stans (L.) was found to be 1.021 ng/mg extract, by HPTLC. The study concludes that the anti-inflammatory activity of stem bark of Tecoma stans may be due to the phenolics present in the extracts. Further studies are suggested to isolate and identify the more components responsible for the activity.
