FORMULATION AND ANTI-DIABETIC ACTIVITY STUDIES OF HERBOMINERAL FORMULATION FOR TREATMENT OF DIABETES
AbstractSeveral formulations are marketed globally, claiming to be useful in diabetes & other associated diseases. In the present study, an attempt has been made to study the comparative efficiency of herbal formulations, for their hypoglycemic activity. The study was conducted on healthy rats randomly distributed streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic control & test rat groups. In diabetes-induced rats fed with herbomineral formulation 500 mg/kg & 1000 mg/kg. The hypoglycemic activity was studied by measuring the reduction in blood glucose levels & increased body weight at different time intervals. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the Antidiabetic activity of herbomineral formulation containing five different herbs & two minerals in streptozotocin (STZ 50 mg/kg ip single dose) induced diabetic rats. Treatment with formulation F1 (500 mg/kg) & F2 (1000 mg/kg) by oral administration for 4 weeks produced a significant reduction in blood glucose level & increase body weight in diabetic rats. The efficacy of plant extract was comparable with Glibenclamide & Insulin, a well known hypoglycemic drug. In STZ induced diabetic rats, a significant lowering of blood glucose & increase in weight was noticed for 4 weeks following treatment with test formulation 500 mg/kg (P< 0.05).
