The imbalance between aggressive (pepsin, Hydrochloric acid) and protective elements (bicarbonate and mucosa) in the inner lining of the stomach lead to the formation of peptic ulcers. The presence of Body fluids, mucosal hydrophobicity, fast epithelial cell recharging, and rich mucosal blood flow is involved in mucosal protection of the Stomach. Prostaglandins E2 and I2 are the predominant prostaglandins which synthesized by the gastric mucosa and known to hinder the emission of gastric acid and stimulate the discharge of body fluid and bicarbonate. The treatment of peptic ulcers can either be achieved with declination in aggressive elements or elevation of mucosal resistance in the stomach and duodenum with cytoprotective agents. In this review, 30 herbal medicinal plants have been discussed along with its respective extracts; these are Bauhinea veriegata, Euphorbia umbellata, Azadirachta indica, Centella asiatica, Indigo feratinctoria, Mangofera indica, Moringa oleifera, Mimosa pudica, Aegle marmelos, Lawsonia inermis, Tephrosia purpuria, Plantago lanceolata, Solanum nigrum, Annonas quamosa, Ocimum sanctum, Morus alba, Pinusrox burghi, Allium sativum, Hibiscus cannabinus, Emblica officinalis, Curcuma longa,...

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the abnormal aggregation of amyloid ß (Aß) peptide into insoluble fibrils called amyloid plaques. Preventing this process of fibrillization may offer effective therapy for treatment of AD. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of methanolic extracts of 13 plant species which are known to be brain boosters in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Our study addressed the influence of these extracts on (i) prevention of aggregation of Aß and (ii) dissociation of preformed Aß fibrils. The aggregation status was monitored by thioflavin T fluorescence assay. The results showed that extracts from Bacopa monneria, Centella asiatica, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Withania sominfera, Nardostachys jatamansi and Glycirrhiza glabra exhibited promising activity by preventing Aß fibril formation/ retention thus identifying Aß as the molecular target for their action. These findings prompt further studies to isolate the active ingredients from these extracts to ultimately determine their therapeutic potential in AD...

Centella asiatica is a medicinal plant. It is severely affected by leaf spot disease caused by a harmful, antibiotic resistant phyto pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pv. centellae (X. c. pv. c). Farmers used synthetic pesticides to control the disease. When pesticides are applied to control this pathogen, pesticides may cause environmental hazards and health problems in man. But traditionally plants are used to prevent or control the plant diseases in agriculture. It is an eco- friendly, biocontrol, traditional method. Hence the aim of the present study is to control the pathogen in biocontrol method by screening the phytochemicals and antibacterial activity of petroleum ether, chloroform, benzene, methanol and aqueous extracts of fronds of five ferns (Pteridophytes) Adiantum caudatum, Angiopteris evecta, Pteris confusa, Pteris argyraea and Lygodium microphyllum against X. c. pv. c. The methanol extracts of all the ferns gave successful result against the tested bacteria. Phytochemical analysis of all the extracts revealed that antibacterial activity is due to the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds. According to the...
