Euphorbia hirta Linn. (Euphorbiaceae), commonly known as ‘Dudhy’ is an annual medicinal herb of Kumaun Himalaya Uttarakhand. It is an invasive plant used in conventional medicine to treat various diseases such as gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory system disorders, and asthma. The present review is designed to compile updated information on E. hirta, including its medicinal uses, phytochemicals, as well as biological activities. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical studies on E. hirta revealed the presence of various chemical compounds in which flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenols are the major constituents. These monomeric compounds and crude extracts from E. hirta have also been screened for pharmacological activities in-vivo and in-vitro. Different parts of the plant have interesting antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antitumor properties. The present study evaluated the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of chloroform, hexane methanol, and petroleum ether extracts of Plumbago zeylanica (PEC, PEH, PEM, and PEP). Antimicrobial activities of the extracts were evaluated against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus-ATCC 6538 and Bacillus cereus-NCIM 2155) and gram-negative bacteria (E. coli-ATCC 8739) along with cytotoxicity activity against cervix carcinoma cell lines (HeLa and SiHa cell lines). Out of the four extracts tested, PEM and PEC extracts showed significantly high value of zone of inhibition against tested bacteria. PEM showed zone of inhibition of 10 mm, 13mm and 8 mm in ATCC 6538, NCIM 2155 and ATCC 8739, respectively. On the other hand, chloroform extract showed a zone of inhibition of 8mm, 10mm and 7 mm in ATCC 6538, NCIM 2155 and ATCC 8739, respectively. Jatropha gossypiifolia Linn. (Euphorbiaceae) is an ornamental shrub extensively used in traditional medicine for various ailments. In view of its potential medicinal properties, an attempt has been undertaken to devise an efficient protocol for in-vitro propagation from the internodes explants of J. gossypiifolia for a rapid and large-scale production as well as to study the phytochemical composition by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Further, the petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts of callus tissue were subjected to thin-layer chromatography (TLC) as well as for synthesizing silver and gold nanoparticles. The five bands resolved by TLC chromatogram were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and screened for antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Internode region of the one-year-old plant was used as explants. Actino bacterium Streptomyces sp. NLKPB45, which was isolated from mangrove soil sediments of Nellore coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, India, was used in shake-flask fermentation to explore the different carbon and nitrogen substrates for antimicrobial crude compound. Careful experimentation of ranging each variable in the fermentation medium found that glucose and peptone as preferred carbon and nitrogen sources at 1% (w/v) concentration each, at pH of 7 and 28 °C incubation temperature for 8 days of incubation time. Response surface methodology-based statistical optimization of the process variables with their interconnection was analyzed using a central composite design. A second-order quadratic polynomial equation yielded a complacent fit for experimental with respect to crude compound concentration.
