Marine algae are one of the largest sources for biogenic compounds. They produce a wide variety of chemically active metabolites. They are found to possess significant antioxidant, and phytochemical activities. Macroalgae provides a great variety of metabolites and natural bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity, such as polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, phlorotannins and other phenolic compounds, and carotenoids. Several species of brown algae have been investigated for their bioactive natural products. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial activity and GC-MS analysis of active compounds present in the methanol extract of the brown algae, Padina tetrastromatica. For antioxidant activity, DPPH radical assay, ABTS radical cation scavenging assay, phosphomolybdenum reduction assay and Fe3+ reducing power assay were carried out. The maximum DPPH radical scavenging activity was 54.78%. The extract also exhibited significant antibacterial activity against the clinical pathogens, Vibrio cholera, Shigella flexneri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of fatty...

The present study elucidates the secondary metabolite profile of leaves of Pseudarthria viscida, one of the main ingredient of dasamula in Ayurveda. Alkaloids, phenolic compounds and flavonoids were estimated in different solvent-extracts. Acetone extract of leaves showed highest content of phenols and flavonoids. The leaves are quite rich in alkaloids and is found to be 1.9 mg g-1. GC-MS analyses revealed the presence of 20 major volatile organic compounds and were identified by their mass fragmentation pattern in comparison with NIST library. Most of the compounds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. The present study has identified a major compound Neophytadiene which is a well-known enzyme...

Chenopodium album (sub sp. striatum) is a folk and nutritious medicine belongs to Chenopodiaceae family and widely used as antimicrobial agent. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial potential against multidrug-resistance (MDR) bacteria isolated from clinical spicemens, antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoids content of crude ethanolic extract and nine different fractions of C. album (sub sp. striatum). The in vitro antibacterial activity was evaluate against eight multidrug-resistant bacteria based on minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), agar well and disk diffusion methods. Antioxidant property was evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical scavenging activity. The total phenol contents were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 assays. Our results showed that MeOH: H2O with 80:20 ratio (most polar) fraction had the highest antimicrobial effect on eight multidrug-resistant bacteria (MIC: 0.15-2.5 mg/ml, MBC: 0.31-5 mg/ml and had highest inhibitation zones (well: 24.33±0.57 mm and disk: 26.33±1.53 mm). In antioxidant assay, MeOH: H2O fraction also exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity [Antioxidant activity = 95.1±2.13...

The tradition of home treatment is found in all cultures throughout the world whether in developed or developing countries. Few herbal drugs commonly appear in the home use as a medicine. One such drug is Zanjabeel, it is the rhizome of Zingiber officinale Rosc. It is a popular culinary spice that was used as an important medicine by ancient Unani physicians. It is a very important drug of house hold medicine kit used mainly as antiflatulant, digestive, anti cough and other indications mentioned in traditional Unani text. Beside its traditional uses its new indications are as an, ant-emetic, hypocholesterolaemic antioxidant, antimicrobial, cardioprotective etc. Unani medicine has provided lot of information regarding this drug. Fresh look on the indications of Zanjabeel is needed in the light of current research performed on it and further scope of research can also be explored with the help of traditional knowledge exist in Unani medicine. This review is an attempt in this direction, so that Zanjabeel can become more beneficial to ailing people and...

Microalgae have been widely used as novel source of bioactive substances. These substances exhibit various biological actions including, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, antitumoral, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy effects. In the present investigation algal biomass in methanol extracts of chlorophyceae member of three micro algae of Chlorella vulgaris, Desmococcus olivaceous and Chlorococcum humicola was screened. The antioxidant property of the methanolic extracts of these green microalgae was evaluated by measuring the free radical scavenging activity by DPPH assay method. The algal extracts were then evaluated for their suppressive effect on tumor cell growth (MCF7) by using MTT assay and further analysed using GC-MS to determine the profile of specific molecules or compounds. Antioxidant activities of the microalgal methanol extracts were studied by their ability to scavenge DPPH at various concentrations. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was found to be higher in Chlorella vulgaris (RSA 53.96%) at a concentration 20μg compared to standard ascorbic acid (RSA 59.42%). Anticancer property of the methanol extracts of Chlorella vulgaris, Desmococcus olivaceous and Chlorococcum humicola in MCF7...
