The aim of the present study is an attempt to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis on bacterial pathogens. The methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis were prepared and the antibacterial activity was determined by agar well diffusion method on different bacterial strains (Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., E coli., Staphylococcus sp. and Klebsiella sp.). Isolation and the purification of the antibacterial principle were carried out by using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The thermal stability of the extract was determined by incubating the extract at different temperatures. The methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish showed antibacterial activity on different bacterial strains. Of the five different species used, the bacterial species Bacillus were found to be more sensitive than all the other species. Metal oxide in the nanorange acquires distinctive properties that depend on size, chemical composition and surface chemistry. Among the metal oxide nanoparticles, the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are commonly used for their antimicrobial properties. ZnO nanomaterials are incorporated into a variety of skin coatings because of their antimicrobial and/or antifungal properties. Most of the future therapeutic applications of NPs are based on intravenous/oral administration. Experiments on their interaction with blood components especially erythrocytes are of immense importance, if the nanoparticles are to be administered intravenously. Haemolytic potential of ZnO NPs was assessed spectrophotometerically as well as by phase contrast microscopy. Lannea coromandelica (Anacardiaceae) is a tropical tree commonly called as Indian ash tree. Its various parts is said to possess medicinal property and used in Ayurveda and other ancient system of medicine for the treatment of various ailments including treatment of inflammation, gout, cholera, leprosy, vaginal troubles etc. Its Pharmacological study revealed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hypotensive, anticancerous activities. Leaves of Lannea coromandelica were collected from Azhagar malai, Madurai. The sample specimen of Lannea coromandelica was identified and authenticated by Dr. Jaya Raman, Taxonomist, Chennai. The present work was carried out to identify some of the phytocomponents present in the ethanolic leaf extract of the L. coromandelica by GC-MS technique, to ascertain the medicinal properties of the plant and also to assess its anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic potential of ethanolic leaf extract of Lannea coromandelica. The results revealed that ethanolic extract is mainly composed of oxygenated hydrocarbons and predominantly phenolic hydrocarbons. The investigation of terrestrial plants origin aimed at searching new natural biologically active compounds is a central issue of this kind of studies, through structure elucidation combined with biological tests. We investigated the biologically active secondary metabolites from Leucas lavandulaefolia towards various effects on the behavior of Aphanomyces cochlioides zoospores and with antimicrobial activity. We purified the following compounds acacetin, chrysoeriol, luteolin, acacetin 7-O-β-D-glucuronide, acetoside, isoacetoside, salicylic acid and caffeic acid. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses and compared with those of the reported data. Five compounds (luteolin, acacetin 7-O-β-D-glucuronide, acetoside, isoacetoside, and salicylic acid) were isolated from L. lavandulaefolia for the first time ever. It was found that luteolin showed a strong attractant and encystment activity toward zoospores of the phytopathogenic fungus A. cochlioides zoospores. Chrysoeriol also showed an attractant activity towards A. cochlioides zoospores. This is the first research report of L. lavandulaefolia regarding zoospores bioassay.
