The positive results of screening medicinal plants for antimicrobial activity forms primary platform for phytochemical and pharmacological studies in future. The work was undertaken to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of four medicinal plants viz., Sesbania grandiflora, Epiphyllum oxypetalum, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, and Vetiveria zizanioides. Leaves were extracted using water and ethanol as solvents. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against five bacterial and fungal pathogens like Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Enterobacter aerogenes and Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium monoliforme, Penicillium sp. Aqueous extracts of S. grandiflora was found to be most effective in inhibiting B.subtilis (23 ± 0.66) while ethanolic extracts showed N. arbor-tristis inhibiting S.typhi (20 ± 0.35). Further aqueous extracts of S. grandiflora showed considerable effect of inhibition against Penicillum sp. In the present study 10 morpholine mannich base derivatives were synthesized by three component reaction of morpholine, N-phenylacetamide and various substituted benzaldehydes. Progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography and the compounds synthesized were characterized by ATR and 1HNMR techniques. Antimicrobial activity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated against gram positive strains Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and gram negative strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli by cup plate method. Dental caries is a complex disease which is expressed as an interaction between various factors including the host, agent, substrate and time. The interplay between the dental biofilm and oral microorganisms is an important feature for development of a cariogenic dental plaque. Formation of the biofilm needs to be controlled through regular brushing in order to prevent the development of caries and periodontal diseases. Exacum lawii is folklore medicinal herb, boiled with oil and used traditionally for ocular infection. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the in-vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity against ocular infection. Ethanolic extract, petroleum ether extract and volatile oil were extracted from Exacum lawii whole plant. Antibacterial activity and antifungal activity against strains causing ocular infection were evaluated and Himalaya Optha-care Eye Drop was used as standard. The antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by agar disc diffusion assay method. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum fungicidal concentration were determined for each extract and volatile oil by subculturing the samples. The volatile oil and the extracts of Exacum lawii showed bactericidal and fungicidal activities against some strains of bacteria and fungi causing ocular infection. Pogostemon quadrifolius (Benth.) is a medicinal aromatic shrub in family Lamiaceae which is used as folk medicine in India. This present study deals with the preliminary screening of Pogostemon quadrifolius antimicrobial activity and TLC profiling of the crude plant extract. Cold extraction technique was carried out to prepare the crude plant extract, which was further screened for the presence of phytochemicals. The extracts were assessed for antibacterial and antifungal studies by disc diffusion method. Thin layer chromatography was utilized for solvent standardization. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of diverse classes of bioactive components. The quantitative analysis of flavanoids, alkaloids and total phenolic content in different extracts varied from each other. Evaluation of antibacterial studies showed that methanolic extract and ethyl acetate extract showed activity against standard and MDR strains respectively. The ethanolic extract also showed fungicidal activity.
