Terminalia catappa Linn. belongs to the family Combretraceae found in tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Australia, which is commonly called as Indian almond, sea-almond, tropical almond, wild badam. The fruit is useful in bronchitis and bowels. Juice of leaves is used in the preparation of the ointment for scabies, leprosy, cutaneous diseases and also as analgesic. The root bark is used in dysentery and diarrhoea. The stem bark cures fevers. The oil yielded from kernels is used commercially as a substituted for almond oil. According to the literature the different parts of the plants is used in many therapies including, antibacterial anticlastogenic, antioxidant, antifungal, antiulcer and molluscidal activity, management of sickle cell aneamia, anticancer, anti HIV reverse transcriptase, hepato- protective, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic. In this study the methanol extracts of two varieties of Terminalia catappa (yellow and red variety) leaf was screened for antifungal like Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger and antibacterial like Eschiershea coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter species, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aerogenosa and Bacillus cereus was evaluated. The...

Natural drugs are boom to mankind. They have few side effects as compared to allopathic medicines. Psidium guajava, is an important food crop and medicinal plant in tropical and subtropical countries is widely used like food and in folk medicine around of the world. Psidium guajava linked with the antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-allergy, antimicrobial, antigenotoxic, antiplasmodial, cytotoxic, antispasmodic, cardio active, anti-cough, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities and also used as hypoglycemic agent. Decoction of the bark used for diarrhoea and fever of Manilkara zapota. It contains linoleic acid, oleic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid, tannins, flavonoids. Crude extract of Manilkara zapota and Psidium guajava showed anti-microbial activity against gram positive Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and gram negative Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhii. The alcoholic fractions of leaves of Psidium guajava and Manilkara zapota were taken. The concentrations of leaf extract are made and evaluated for antimicrobial activity. DMSO is used as standard for antimicrobial assay. Highest zone of inhibition seen on the concentration of (0:2) and (0.4:1.6 ) for all...

Introduction: The ear, nose and throat (ENT) infections can be caused by a variety of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. Their treatment involves the use of appropriate antimicrobial agents and inappropriate use is closely linked to antibiotic resistance. Hence, present study was planned to evaluate the prescribing pattern of antimicrobials in the ENT outpatient department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted from May 2016 to August 2016. Prescriptions of patients diagnosed with ENT infections were included. The information such as age, sex, type of ENT infections and drug data were noted in preformed case record form and evaluated. Results: Over 3 month study period, 512 prescriptions were analysed. Majority of the study population were in the age group of 21-40 years. Total numbers of males were 274 and females were 238. Among all, most common ear infection was chronic suppurative otitis media (17.19%). The commonest antimicrobial prescribed was Ciprofloxacin (29.18%) followed by Amoxicillin (25.38%). Only one antimicrobial was...

The nature harbours a huge source of active principles possessing antimicrobial property. This phenomenon provokes microbiologists, ethnopharmacologist and natural product chemists to perform extensive research on phytoprinciples. The extensive use of these principles in phytotherapy is becoming an excellent alternative strategy against the occurrence of microbial resistance due to some conventional medicines. The current research article dealt with ethanolic crude extractives from the dried leaves of Ocimum sanctum Linn. and fresh Leaf stalks of Piper betle Linn. were screened for its antimicrobial activity using the agar-well diffusion method. The sample of the mentioned herbs could be easily found in large amount from the environment of north east region in India. In our present study with Ocimum sanctum L. (tulsi) leaf extract showed marked inhibitory effect on Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E.coli, Vibrio cholerae where a highest zone of inhibition estimated was 30 mm against E. coli. Tulsi extractive possess partial inhibition against Candida albicans. Crude ethanolic extractive of Piper betle Linn. (Paan) stalk remarkably inhibited. A. niger, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans where the...

India is a land of medicinal flora, there are large numbers of plants with miraculous medicinal values has been used traditionally to cure several diseases from decades in Ayurveda. So the present study was designated to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of Aegle marmelos (bale) bark extracts. In this study different bark extracts were prepared using various solvents, further these extracts were analyzed against selected microbial strains like Escherichia coli (MTCC-443), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC-441), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673), Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC-3160), Aspergillus brasiliensis (MTCC-1344) and Candida albicans (MTCC-227) by agar well diffusion method and determination MIC by broth dilution method. The extracts showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities by inhibiting the growth of respective microorganism in agar well diffusion assay. Extracts of acetone and ethanol 70% showed highest activity against Escherichia coli whereas methanol and choloroform extracts showed significant activity against Bacillus subtilis. The present study supports the immense medicinal properties of Aegle marmelos bark. The study may be insight for future researches in area of new drug development of...
