Sphaeranthus indicus Linn (Asteraceae) is a common annual spreading herb found in rice field throughout India. Six crude extracts were prepared from the whole plant Sphaeranthus indicus using different solvents by cold maceration process. The extracts were subjected to screening to detect potential antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, B. substillus, P. Gentamycin and Nystatin as standard by cup plate agar diffusion method. The aim of our present study was to find out the antimicrobial activity of the different extracts of entire part including flower heads of Sphaeranthus indicus. The different extracts such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol and aqueous extract exhibits comparable antimicrobial activity with the...

Infectious diseases are the second leading cause of death worldwide. Treatment of infections continues to be problematic in modern time because of the severe side effects of some drugs and the growing resistance to antimicrobial agents. Butea monosperma (L) bark ethanolic and aqueous extract has shown good efficacy against Bacillus cereus. Pseudomonas aerugenosa and Escherichia Coli in concentration dependent manner which were grown on MH- Agar medium. 1000mg/ml has shown better zone of inhibition (ZOI) in all the cases of above micro...

The present paper deals with the microbial studies of the complex Co(II) & Cu(II) with antibiotic drug Tetracycline, a formula Co (C22 H24 N2 O8) MoO4 4H2O and Cu (C22 H24 N2 O8) MoO4 3H2O has been suggested on the basis of elemental analysis and molar conductance for the newly synthesized complex. The microbial studies of synthesized complex were studied on pathogenic bacteria using gram +ve (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and gram -ve (Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhosa, Escherichia coli) and some fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium oxysporum, Chrysosporium pannicale, Alternaria solani, Candida albicans )....

Currently, natural polysaccharides are being utilized increasingly in the markets because they exhibit biodegradability, biocompatibility, versatility, and are found abundant in nature. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide that possesses excellent biological properties. It has been recognized for its antibacterial activity, in that it is destructive towards the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The major problem associated for its use in formulation is its water insolubility. This research entails the chemical modification of chitosan with N-acylation and crosslinking using substituted benzoyl chloride to enhance its solubility and antimicrobial properties. The derivative also shoe antifungal activity against Candida species. It is believed that these types of hydrophilic derivatives shows better bioadhesion and inhibit the growth of bacteria by initial electrostatic interactions with negatively charged groups of the bacterial cell surface. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the water soluble N-acyl crosslinked chitosan were investigated using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. Substituted benzoyl chloride derivative of chitosan exhibited a MIC of 45 μg/mL against Escherichia coli...

Colocasia esculenta belonging to family araceae popularly knows as “taro”, is very useful medicinal plant described by Charaka as an anti-inflammatory plant. An experiment was carried out to study the antimicrobial activity of chloroform and methanol extract of Colocasia esculenta plant by agar diffusion method. Zone of inhibition produced by chloroform and methanol extract in dose of 20, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.625, 0.3125 mg/ml against some selected strains was measured and compared with standard antibiotics tetracycline in dose of 5, 2.5, 0.625, 0.3125, 0.15625, 0.078072...
