The present study was aimed to evaluate the antihyperlipidemic effect of aqueous extract of stem of Tinospora cordifolia in streptozotocin induced diabetic and diet induced hyperlipidemic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced in male albino Wistar rats by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (45 mg/kg b.w.). Hyperlipidemia was induced in diabetic rats by feeding 0.5% cholesterol and 0.1% cholic acid on diet basis in arachis oil (10 ml/kg b.wt) orally throughout the experimental period and simultaneously, the treatment groups received T. cordifolia (100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) orally for 14 days. Glibenclamide (600 µg/kg b.w) was used as a standard antidiabetic drug and atorvastatin (1.2 mg/kg b.w.) was used as a standard antihyperlipidemic drug. Serum glucose levels were determined at weekly intervals and serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, creatine kinase and free fatty acids were analyzed at the end of the experiment. The objective of the project work was to study the effect of Hypoglycemic and Hypolipidemic activity of 2- hydroxychalcone on high fructose diet induced insulin resistance in male Wister Albino rats. Rats were rendered insulin resistant by feeding 66% (w/w) fructose and 1.1% (v/w) coconut oil mixed with normal pellet diet (NPD) for 3 weeks. Insulin resistance high fructose diabetic rats receiving hydroxychalcone intraperitoneally (i.p.) at the dose of 25mg/kg body weight daily for 7 consecutive days. At the end of the study blood glucose, serum insulin, glycosylated haemoglobin was estimated. The tissue was used for the assay of enzyme activity of Hexokinase, Glycogen, Glu-6-phosphatase and fru-1, 6 bis phosphatase were also estimated. Fructose diet with 2-hydroxychalcone significantly reduced the blood glucose, insulin, glu-6-phosphatase, fru-1, 6 bis phosphatase and significantly increase the hexokinase and glycogen activity. Flaxseed is being consumed as an ingredient in various food formulations as it plays a major role in the field of diet and disease research due to its potential health benefits associated with a- linolenic acid (57%) and its rich phytoestrogens or lignans. Hence, presently, it is in great demand by food industries and in nutraceutical applications. The present study was carried out using 80, 32-weeks old, Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) laying hens which were subjected to 4 dietary treatments, namely Control, 5% flaxseed endosperm-rich fraction (ERF), 10% ERF and 20% ERF. At the end of the 4th week, all groups were examined hematologically and histopathologically. There was a linear relationship between feed consumption and decrease in body weight. In the present study we have explored the effect of Urtica dioica, a traditional antidiabetic herb used in India and Bangladesh, on insulinemic and chronic inflammatory status of type 1 diabetic model rats. The mature and fresh leaves of U. dioica was collected from the mountain range of Assam in India and the water extract of the leaves was used at a dose of 1.25g/kg body weight. Adult Long-Evans male rats, bred at BIRDEM Animal house, were used in this study. Type 1 DM was produced with single intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin using standardized methods. The experiment for semi-chronic effects was done with continuous feeding of water extract of U. dioica for 8 days.
