Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening condition with the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders. The core physiological features of ANare the extreme overvaluation of shape and weight. Severe AN causes cardiovascular complications and majorly refeeding syndrome. The prominent features of refeeding syndrome include severe hypo-phosphatemia, hypokalemia and hypomagnesia, and other fluid imbalance abnormalities, vitamin deficiencies, volume overload, and edema. Most cases are brought to clinical attention only when there are severe somatic complaints. According to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) classification, the patients with AN present chronic disease-related malnutrition without inflammation with different degrees of severity. To be diagnosed with anorexia nervosa a person must meet all of the current DSM 5 criteria. We cannot pinpoint a single cause for anorexia nervosa. It is caused by the complex interaction of various genetic and psychosocial factors, other risk factors include: stress, social isolation, poor emotion regulation strategies, and general psychiatric co-morbidities. In anorexia, Nutritional supplements can improve weight gain, which can reverse the abnormal hematological factors,...

Remarkable numbers of people have a false belief in naturally obtained herbal medicines as they are safe to use, omitting the fact that herbal medicines have pharmacological action like allopathic medicines. Many plants are poisonous and there is less safety data available for herbal medicines. Adverse drug reactions associated with herbal medicines are overdose and toxicity, herb interactions and hypersensitivity reactions. The potential side effects, the quantity of intake, risk of herbal medicines should be adequately developed. Herbal medicines, which are well studied, are not tested in the groups of the population like pediatrics, pregnant or breastfeeding women, geriatrics, or people with multiple co-morbidities. Many herbal medicines are under-examined, and their harmful effects sun known. The patients cannot be intimated properly about the risks and benefits unless the physician fails to show evidence about potency or side-effects of herbal medicines. The high demand for standard herbal medicines puts pressure on high-demand species and plants, leading to the extinction of selected species and plants. It is essential to take measures...

Pectinase is a collection of enzymes that degrade pectin into simpler compounds known as galacturonic acids. Microbes and plants largely produce pectinase, and it has a wide range of biotechnological applications in food, agriculture, industry, the environment and medicine. Fruit juices, coffee, cocoa, tea, jams and jellies are all made with pectinase in the food industry. Furthermore, pectinase, a supplemental enzyme found in animal feed, increases nutrient absorption. Pectinase has been utilized in the agricultural sector for plant virus purification, oil extraction, retting and degumming processes, and cotton fiber bio-scouring. They play a critical function in wastewater treatment by facilitating pectin breakdown in the environmental sector. Pectinases are mostly used in the wine and paper industries in the industrial sector. Pectinases are probiotic enzymes that are introduced to a variety of foods in medicine. This review aims to compile all of the accessible information on pectinase enzymes’ biotechnological applications in diverse...

Any errors in medical dispensing may threaten the patient’s life. Hence, this research aimed to compare and evaluate the dispensing errors and to identify its prevalence and severity through the safety reporting system (SRS) and providing feedback at “King Abdulaziz Medical City, Central Region (KAMC-CR)” and “King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital (KASCH)”.The KAMC-SRS was used to collect data on dispensing errors. In order to analyze the dispensing errors, the reasons for the errors were reviewed and the errors were classified. In order to study and categorize the medication error data, the “National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (NCCMERP)” index was utilized. Out of 3017 safety reports submitted to the SRS during 2017, the number of dispensing errors recorded was 448 (14.84% of the errors). Out of 2381 safety reports submitted to the SRS in 2018, approximately 18% of dispensing errors were recorded, which were significant (p < 0.001). Generally, “KAMC and KASCH” pharmacies showed relatively low percentages of dispensing errors that did not exceed 0.01% of...

Ulcerative colitis was defined as a common intestinal infla-mmatory disease characterized by upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress. The leaves of Murraya koenigii and Centella asiatica had been used in traditional medicine to treat the disease. The present study aimed to perform a comparative protective efficacy evaluation between Murraya koenigii and Centella asiatica on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats. Rats were randomly categorized into nine groups: control, acetic acid, standard drug, acetic acid + extract of Murraya koenigii (50, 100, 200 mg/kg), and acetic acid + extract of Centella asiatica (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) groups. After 5 days of feeding, colitis was induced in the experimental animal groups by transrectal administration of 1ml of 4% acetic acid. The rats were sacrificed after 24 hr of rectal installation, and their colon tissues were examined. Pretreatment with extract of Murraya koenigii and Centella asiatica significantly reduced colon weight-length, macroscopic scores, histological changes, and upregulated the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). The above results indicated that oral administration of...
