Delonix elata (D. elata) whole plant was chosen to evaluate in-vitro anti-oxidant activities. The total polyphenols and flavonoids were determined after the extraction. DPPH (2, 2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazy), H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide), NO (Nitric oxide) and TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid) methods were used to evaluate antioxidant activities of D. elata whole plant. The results showed that the highest levels of polyphenols were recorded in DEM (15.32 ± 0.32 mg of GA/g of extract). Total flavonoid contents of extracts/fractions showed that DEM (15.57 ± 0.69 mg of Qu/g of extract) contains the highest level. The DEM extract shows more inhibition of DPPH (92.56), NO (143.88), H2O2 (182.28) and TBARS (121.94 µg/ml), respectively when compared with other extracts. These findings suggest that the extracts obtained from D. elata stem have active substances contributing to the increase in natural antioxidant potential. It can be concluded from the findings that D. elata extracts have potent antioxidant...

Objective: To explore the Teratogenicity of isolated Polyphenols of Symphyocladia latiuscula (PSL) on pregnant female rats. Experimental Design: The marine alga Symphyocladia latiuscula were the preparation of methanolic extract followed by isolation of Polyphenols. The Teratogenic study was performed according to the OECD guidelines, no 415. And the test drug; PSL 100, 200 and 1000 mg/kg and positive control Valproic acid (VPA); 1000 mg/kg was administered from 6th to 17th day of gestation during the period of fetal organogenesis. All females were killed on the 20th day of pregnancy, and their uterus was dissected to examine the Gross Abnormalities. Results and Conclusion: VPA significantly reduced all body measurements in terms of growth retardation, body weight, height, lower and upper limb, VPA showed mortality of 2 pups in the concentration of 1000 mg/kg/bw i.v whereas in PSL no significant differences were noted concerning the positive control group. The highest difference was shown especially PSL 1000 mg/kg/bw fetal morphological abnormalities; regarding the weight and length of the fetuses, there was a...

Background: Improper asthma inhaler device use was most likely one of the major causes associated with uncontrolled asthma and frequent respiratory clinic visits. Therefore, assessment of the effect of the improper use of metered dose inhaler device in the control of bronchial asthma, and the factors that have important impact on asthma management and control. Objectives: To evaluate the inhaler technique among asthmatic patients and to investigate the characteristics of these patients and factors associated with improper use of inhaler devices and its relationship with asthma control. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 100 patients who visited respiratory clinic at Baghdad Teaching Hospital with bronchial asthma from 1st of August 2014 to 28th February 2015. Information was collected about demographic data and asthma control and we assessed the inhaler techniques for each patient using an inhaler technique checklist. Results: Among the 100 asthma patients, 50 (50%) were male, 50 (50%) female. There was a statistically significant association between educational defects with the gender (P value <0.05). There was a statistically...

Objective: To evaluate the anticonvulsant property of Zingiber officinale as well as its interaction with conventional anticonvulsant drug using Maximal electroshock seizures (MES) model and to evaluate possible mechanism involved in its action. Method: The present study was done after getting ethical clearance. The rhizomes of ginger were authenticated and extraction of dried rhizomes was done by using Soxhlet apparatus to obtain its ethanolic extract. Animals were divided into 4 groups using Phenytoin (25 mg/kg) as the standard drug. The alcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale was given at the doses of 200 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. The test samples will be given one hour prior to induction of convulsions. Results: In MES model, the alcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale at the doses of 200 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg p.o significantly reduced the duration of tonic hind limb extension (THLE) in mice (P<0.05) in a dose dependent manner as compared to the vehicle control. The extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight is found to be effective nearly...

The antihyperglycaemic activity of aqueous leaf extract of Newbouldia laevis (ALENL) was evaluated in rats. Twenty-five rats of both sexes (120 – 160 g) were divided into five groups (A-E) of 5 animals each. Group A (control) rats were administered 0.5 ml of distilled water (DW) orally while those in group B received 100 mg/kg body weight of ALENL. Animals in groups C, D and E which induced into hyperglycaemia (intraperitoneal administration of 150 mg/kg body weight of alloxan) were also administered DW, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight of ALENL respectively, once daily for 14 days. Blood glucose levels (BGL) were determined at an interval of two days. Alloxan significantly (p<0.05) increased BGL in the DW treated hyper-glycaemic animals (DWTHA) from 48.00 ± 1.79 to 142.80 ± 2.35 mg/dl after 24 h. After two days, administration of the extract at 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight increased blood glucose level, but this increase was not statistically significant (p>0.05) when compared with the DWTHA. On day 4, the extract...
