Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr. which is known as Kayu Jawa in Bugis community, Indonesia has been widely used empirically for the treatment of wounds. Ethanol extract from its stem bark is known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammation, and antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study were to isolate, characterize, and determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the endophytic fungi from the roots of this plant. In this paper, we reported antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the isolated endophytic fungi from Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr. and the isolation of the bioactive compound known as citrinin. The structure of citrinin was determined by extensive analysis of the spectroscopic data (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D NMR, and LC-MS) and comparison to those of the previous report. The antioxidant activity showed that the isolated compound has moderate activity with AAI value of 0.671 and IC50 145.9 ppm while the antimicrobial activity demonstrated that the isolated compound was not active against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella typhi ATCC 14028, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa...

Objective: To investigate the bioactive constituents of Ulva lactuca, Sargassum prismaticum, and Sarconema filiforme using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Methods: 10 gm sample of each seaweed was successfully extracted with HPLC grade methanol and pet. ether with continuous shaking in a dark room for 36 h. The concentrated extracts were subjected to GC MS analysis. Results: The GC MS analysis of methanol and pet ether extracts of U. lactuca, S. prismaticum and S. filiforme show various types of phytocompounds screened under different R.T. Major compounds were 9-Octadecenoic acid (Z)-, phenyl-methyl ester, Stannane,1,3-dithian-2-ylidenebis[tributyl,Octadecane, 3-ethyl-5-(2-ethylbutyl) in methanol extract and Decane, 6-ethyl-2-methyl-, Tricosane and Sulfurous acid, 2-ethylhexyl hexyl ester in pet. ether. These bioactive compounds are considered as biologically and pharmacologically important. Conclusion: The three different extracts contain diverse bioactive compounds that were identified and characterized spectroscopically. Hence, the identification of different biologically active compounds in the extracts of seaweeds justifies further biological and pharmacological...

Medicinal plant identification is necessary for ensuring their efficacy and safety in the quality control of herbal products. The genus Derris belongs to the Leguminosae family. This study aimed to investigate the microscopic characteristics of selected Derris species in Thailand. Eight Derris species (D. amoena, D. elliptica, D. indica, D. malaccensis, D. recticulata, D. scandens, D. solorioides, and D. trifoliata) existing in Thailand were studied. Anatomical characteristics of the leaves were investigated by the midrib transverse section. The laminae were quantitatively investigated for the stomatal number, stomatal index, epidermal cell area, vein islet number, trichome number, and palisade ratio. Trichomes were found in 4 species (D. elliptica, D. scanden, D. amoena and D. malaccensis) which presented as unicellular non-glandular trichome on the lower epidermis. Stomatal type found in Derris species in this study was paracytic type and presented only on lower epidermis, except D. trifoliata which was found on both lower and upper epidermis. The anatomical characteristics of the midrib of eight studied Derris species were illustrated, showing the...

Due to emergent concerns about unhealthy consequences of chemicals in the health industry, the interest towards natural and herbal substances has been growing every day. In this study, the antioxidant effect of Cassia fistula [CFF] and Cassia auriculata [CAF] extract was evaluated. Also discover wound healing activity of polyherbal formulation (CFF and CAF). The antioxidant activity of the extract was evaluated by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined to screen the prepared extracts by using the Folin-Ciocalteu phenol reagent method. The polyherbal formulation (CFF and CAF) using the excision wound model. The CFF and CAF extracts showed variable degrees of antioxidant activity. The formulated gel accelerates the wound healing process which may be due to enhancing the cellular defense mechanisms, proliferation, suppression of inflammation, and contraction of the collagen tissue and could be delayed by reactive oxygen species or microbial infection. The results suggest that extracts have antioxidant properties, which may be a potentially promising agent and favorable for wound healing,...

Pteris vittata L., a fern species in the Pteridoideae subfamily of Pteridaceae, is known to possess various medicinal properties. P. vittata is used as a folk medicine in the Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu, Western Ghats, and Vindhyan region of Madhya Pradesh, India. The present study was undertaken to evaluate antigenotoxic, antioxidant, and antiproliferative potential of P. vittata L. HPLC analysis was carried out for identification of polyphenols in n-butanol fraction of P. vittata L. (Pvitnol). The fraction significantly inhibited H2O2 and 4NQO induced genotoxicity in E. coli PQ 37 in SOS chromotest. Pvitnol fraction showed promising antioxidant potency in various in-vitro antioxidant assays viz. in DPPH, reducing power, superoxide anion scavenging, lipid peroxidation, site-specific hydroxyl scavenging, and non-site specific hydroxyl scavenging assays. Pvitnol was also effective in protecting pBR322 plasmid against damage caused by Fenton’s reagent. The antioxidant activity may in part be accountable for its antigenotoxic activity obtained in SOS chromotest. An inhibition of 74.43% was obtained in MTT assay at a concentration of 200 µg/ml in...
