In the present investigation, a series of some novel 4-[substituted-2-hydroxy-phenyl]-2-(4′-dimethylamino-phenyl)-2, 3-dihydro-1, 5-benzothizepines (2a-l) have been synthesized by the treatment of 1-(substituted-2-hydroxy-phenyl)-3-(4′-dimethylamino-phenyl)-prop-2-en-1-ones (chalcones) (1a-l) with 2-aminothiophenol using ethanol as a solvent in the presence of catalytic amount of Lanthanum Nitrate in short reaction time with excellent yield (70-80%) by a conventional method. The products were tested for purity by TLC, and structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, and Mass spectral analysis. All these newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, Fusarium moneliforme, and Aspergillus flavus, using Penicillin and Greseofulvin as standard drugs. Most of the compounds showed significant...

Kanuga (Pongamia pinnata), a plant belonging to Leguminosae described in Vedas has ethnobotanical importance and a variety of medicinal properties. Pongamia pinnata, commonly grown on the roads of India is used to heal wounds, treat many fungal infections, skin diseases and to clean teeth. The objective of the current study is to perform phytochemical analysis and appraise the antimicrobial activity of hydro-alcoholic bark extract of Pongamia pinnata. Dried, powdered bark was extracted with water and ethanol (1:1) mixture by soxhlation for 72 h. Following the standard tests of phytochemical investigation, the hydro-alcoholic bark extract subsumes constituents like flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, saponins, glycosides, and alkaloids. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the hydro-alcoholic bark extract was evaluated by serial tube dilution method, and MIC for Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger was 100 µg/ml, 100 µg/ml, and 100 µg/ml, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of hydro-alcoholic bark extract of Pongamia was assessed by agar well diffusion method. Organisms used for antimicrobial assessment include Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger....

The current communication deals with the development of Al3+ -ion induced ionotropically gelled microbeads made of deacetylated gellan gum (GG) and Dillenia indica L. fruit gum (DG) blends for sustained release of drugs. Aceclofenac (ACE) was utilized as a model drug candidate in the current study. These GG-DG microbeads of ACE were formulated by ionotropic gelation using AlCl3 as ionotropic cross-linker. In this microbead formulation, various formulation parameters like amount of GG, amount of DG and concentration of AlCl3 were varied and analyzed. These various GG-DG microbeads of ACE demonstrated ACE entrapment efficiency of 24.94 ± 0.32 to 72.76 ± 2.83% and an average micro-bead size of 698.56 ± 19.76 to 955.08 ± 40.62 µm. ACE releasing from various GG-DG microbeads in the in-vitro study was found to be sustained over 8 h. Optimized GG-DG microbeads of ACE followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model (R2 = 0.9918 to 0.9982) with super case-II transport mechanism of a drug (ACE) releasing. The optimized GG-DG microbeads of ACE (F-O) were also characterized by various...

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the diuretic and renal effect of the aqueous extracts of Laurus nobilis leaves and dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum. Four groups of rats were used. Group 1 received distilled water (10 ml/kg BW), group 2 received the aqueous extract of Laurus nobilis (300 mg/kg BW), group 3 received the aqueous extract of Syzygium aromaticum (300 mg/kg BW) and group 4 received furosemide (15 mg/kg BW). The interventions were administered daily for nine days. The urinary volume was measured every day. On day nine, the kidneys were removed for histological analysis, the urine and blood samples were obtained from each rat to analyze urine and plasma potassium, sodium, chloride and creatinine, serum urea, and serum albumin. Renal clearance, saluretic activity, estimation of the carbonic anhydrase inhibition activity, osmolar clearance, plasma osmolarity, free water clearance, free water reabsorption were calculated. The results showed that furosemide and both plants extract produced a significant increase in diuresis, creatinine clearance, and saluretic index, furosemide...

Oregano oil is an essential oil possessing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting properties that can be used in the treatment of various skin disorders. However, its practical applications are limited due to its handling issues and poor stability in the presence of air, light, and high temperature. To overcome these problems, this study aims to entrap oregano essential oil (OEO) in ethyl cellulose (EC) microsponges to get decreased dermal toxicity and enhanced stability. The quasi emulsion solvent diffusion method was utilized for fabrication of the OEO microsponges using EC as polymer, dichloromethane (DCM) as a solvent and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as stabilizer. The effect of formulation variables like stirring rate, stirring time and quantity of polymer were also examined. The prepared microsponges were evaluated for particle size and production yield. Results revealed that all microformulations were in the micro size range (19.87 mm to 248.13 mm), with a good production yield (72.85%) of M6. Spherical uniform shape with a spongy structure of microsponges was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy...
