Excessive antimicrobial use leads to adverse drug effects, thus increased healthcare costs and promoting the emergence of antimicrobial resistance worldwide. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prescription pattern of antibiotics in pediatric outpatients at private hospitals in Rajshahi city of Bangladesh. WHO / INRUD prescribing indicators were used for the analysis of prescription pattern. A total of 329 pediatric prescriptions were analyzed of which 54% male and 46% female. Most of the patients (48%) belongs to the age group of 1 year – 6 years. Body weight was not mentioned in 17% of prescr-iptions, diagnosis was confirmed only in 11% patients and also 11% of children did not take or completed immunization. Among the children born 83% were of caesarian and 17% of normal delivery. The results also indicated that 964 drugs were used by the patients with an average 2.93 per prescription. However, none of the drugs was prescribed in generic name. Interestingly, only 37.24% drugs were prescribed from the national essential drug list. Children...

The rhizome of Tectaria cicutaria has been used in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of various disorders. Different extracts of the rhizomes of Tectaria cicutaria were subjected to phytochemical analysis, anti-microbial activity and in-vitro anticancer activity. The in-vitro anticancer activity was performed using Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay against various cancer cell lines namely Human Leukemia Cell Line (K562), Human Nasopharyngeal Cancer Cell Line (KB), Human Colon Cancer Cell Line (HT29) and Human Colon Cancer Cell Line (Colo205). Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of bioactive compounds. The total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of ethanolic extract was found significantly higher and showed antimicrobial activity against Proteus vulgaris. Out of the various extracts and cell lines used for studying anticancer activity, the ethanolic extract showed excellent anticancer activity against Human Leukemia Cell Line (K562) with GI50 value 11.9 µg/ml. The architecture of cocoons and the chemical compounds present in the cocoons play crucial role to provide protection of the pupae during metamorphosis. Insects spin a silk web as cocoon to facilitate protection and ensuring proper inner environment inside the cocoon during the metamorphosis. Such cocoons are equipped with a variety of chemical compounds which include antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and insect repellent etc. Tasar silk worms are wild silkworms grown on forest trees for their commercial value, are subject to harsh environmental conditions in comparison with domesticated Bombyx mori silk worms. In this study antimicrobial compounds were screened from Indian tropical wild tasar cocoons by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopy (FT-Raman), Gas chromato-graphy- Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and identified the chemical compounds by NIST05 MS Library. Tridentate Schiff bases were obtained in succession from the condensation of ethyl 2-amino-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta [b] thiophene-3-carboxylate and different aryl aldehydes in 1:1 molar ratio. Zinc chloride complexes of these new aminothiophene Schiff bases were prepared in 1:1 metal: ligand stichometry. These complexes were characterized using IR, UV-Visible, elemental analysis and molar conductivity.
