Carissa spinarum L. is a small spinous evergreen shrub growing throughout India in dry regions.The plant used locally in Indian and Chinese system of medicines to cure various diseases. Carissa spinarum has also been used in the Ayurvedic medical system because of its therapeutic effects against liver disease, epileptic disease, microbial disease, cytotoxic, viral diseases.The isolated metabolites and crude extract have exhibited a wide of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological effect, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anticonvulsant, anticancer, antiarthritic, antihelmintic, cytotoxic activity. A chemical study of this plant was then initiated, and this led to the isolation of 12 compounds, including a coumarin, two cardiac glycosides and nine lignans. These isolated compounds were evaluated for several biological activities, including antiherpetic, cytotoxic, antioxidant and antibacterial effects.A shrub, Carissa spinarum have emerged as a good source of the traditional medicines for the treatment of inflammation, arthritis, microbial infection, epilepsy, viral infection, cancer disease. Interest in medicinal plant as a re-emerging health aid has been fuelled by the rising cost of prescription drug in the maintenance of personal health. In present work an attempt has been made to carry out antimicrobial activity of bryonia laciniosa plant, used in Indian folk medicine. The aim of the study was to grow in vitro callus from bryonia laciniosa from leaf explants and its microbial activity. Antibacterial effect of Bryonia laciniosa was evaluated on bacterial strains like Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The solvents used for the extraction of plants were water and methanol. The in vitro antibacterial activity was performed by agar disc diffusion. The most susceptible bacteria was K. pneumoniae. The extracts of callus and plant material could not inhibit any of the bacterial strains investigated. Cow urine therapy and all traditional practices from Indian systems of medicine have a strong scientific base. The cow has proved to be a boon in the areas of agriculture, science and technology, industry, energy, medicine etc for the development of any nation, in addition being eco-friendly in nature. In the present study the antibacterial potentials of cow urine were investigated. Total 14 pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacterial cultures were used as test organism against 10 different cow urine samples. The highest zone of inhibition was shown by sample G against P aeruginosa NCIM 2945 (1.8cm) while the smallest zone of inhibition was shown against E. coli NCIM 2065(0.3 cm) by sample A. Based on cumulative effect against the test organism, the urine sample G was found to be the most efficient inhibiting all the 14 test cultures. ABSTRACT: Fifteen soil samples were collected from different locations near Nagpur i.e. from Nagpur, Bhandara and Chandrapur. Air drying and pre-treatment of soil samples with CaCo3 (1%) were found to be most effective for isolation of actinomycetes. Five different selective media were used for the isolation of actinomycetes and the best growth was observed in yeast malt extract agar medium with 1 mg/ml cycloheximide as antifungal agent and by using double layer agar technique for isolation. Significant differences were found between the counts of actinomycetes on different media. Total 78 actinomycetes species were isolated. More number of actinomycetes were isolated from Nagpur region (32 x 10 cfu/g) as compared to Bhandara (28 x 10 cfu/g) and Chandrapur (18 x 10 cfu/g) regions. Out of 78 isolates 23 isolates showed positive results in primary screening. Maximum isolates showed activity against B. subtilis, B. cereus, S. aureus and E. coli.
