Indole ring system is the most important heterocycle available in natural compounds. Owing to great structural diversity, the indole ring system has become an important structural requirement in many pharmaceutical agents. Indole has been widely identified as a privileged structure or pharmacophore, with its presence in over 3000 natural isolates which are known to possess broad spectrum of biological activities and pharmaceutical applications. The bis (indolyl) methane derivatives are found to be very active compounds in pharmacy field. They are found in cruciferous plants and are known to promote beneficial oestrogen metabolism and induce apoptosis in human cancer cells. In recent years, a lots of bis (indolyl) methane derivatives have been synthesized and found to possess promising biological activities including anticancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, cardiovascular activities. In the present review several synthetic schemes of these compounds are discussed involving non-toxic catalyst and providing high...

The present investigation is mainly on the synthesis, characterization and anti-microbial screening of certain new curcuminoid analogues containing imidazole, pyrrole and thiophene rings and their metal complexes. The ability of such heterocyclic β-dicarbonyl compounds and their metal ions to influence many of complex reaction upon which the vital processes of micro-organisms depends is the motivation behind the work. A series of 5- hetero aryl-1-phenyl-4-pentene-1,3-diones(1a-c) and their Cu (II), Ni (II) complexes of ML2 stoichiometry were synthesized and characterized by UV, IR, mass and 1H NMR spectroscopies. Analytical and spectral data suggest neutral bidentate coordination for unsaturated diketone with metals. Anti-microbial screening was carried out by using Kirby-Bauer disc plate method. All the ligands and their metal complexes showed significant anti-microbial action. Further complexation; seem to augment the antimicrobial activity of the...

About 6 extract (methanol, acetone, hexane, ethyl acetate, hexane-ethyl acetate, aqueous extraction) from the leaves of Mangifera indica was extracted. Hexane-ethyl acetate was characterized by Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectroscopy. Ten constituents from 10 peaks were identified. Terpinyl acetate (5.80%) and phytol isomer (5.12%) are as the major constituents and the minor constituents like oxirane (3.57%), sabinene (3.24%), beta-pinen (3.34%), beta-myrcene (3.23%) , cymene (3.68%), alpha-limonene (2.82%), eucalyptol (1,8-cineo (4.71%), 1,3-benzodioxole, 5-(2-, (3.68%) were identified. The antimicrobial activity of different extract was tested against human and plant pathogenic bacteria. Hexane-ethyl acetate extract showed significant role on inhibiting almost all tested pathogenic organisms. Using histochemical reagents such as Phloroglucinol-HCl, Dragendorff reagent was used for the localization of lignin and alkaloids respectively. Mangifera indica showed 100% larvicide activity. The addition of various concentrations of hexane-ethyl acetate extract of Mangifera indica on the L929 cell lines showed cytotoxic...

Objective: Dental caries is a common oral infection prevalent in developing countries. Streptococcus mutans, a commensal bacterium of the oral cavity, plays a major role in the etiology of caries and root canal infection. Sodium hypochlorite and Chlorhexidine are used in the prevention of caries and as root canal medicament though they cannot be used in combination. Study Design: Different concentrations of passion fruit pulp extract were evaluated to measure the most effective way against Streptococcus mutans. For this bacterial inhibition zones were measured for each concentration in millimeter and compared. Results: The most effective concentration of passion fruit pulp extract was 40% to 45% against Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: The present study aimed to evaluate alternative, inexpensive, good in taste, simple and effective method for sanitization of tooth cavity as well as root canal system. The antimicrobial efficacy of passion fruit pulp extract as irrigant and cavity disinfectant is evaluated and compared with the standard irrigant sodium...

An ongoing, systematic process designed to maintain the appropriate and effective use of drugs is Drug Use Evaluation (DUE). It involves a comprehensive review of patient’s prescription and medication data before, during, and after dispensing in order to assure appropriate therapeutic decision making and positive patient outcomes. The aim of the present study is to conduct a prospective study on utilization pattern of antibiotics in the department of medical teaching hospital situated in North Karnataka to evaluate the rational use of antibiotics, by comparing with the standard Clinical guidelines. The study is a Prospective observational with a sample size of 250 patients conducted using structured data entry forms. In our study, 155 patients were male and 95 were female. The most commonly used class of antibiotics are Cephalosporins (31.2%) preceded by Fluoroquinolones and Azoles. Penicillin’s were also prescribed for most of the infectious diseases. The duration of hospital stay is for more than 7 dayswith prolonged use of antimicrobial agents which does not provide an additional therapeutic benefit while the...
