The multidrug-resistant strains are a major problem in the control of infections in hospitals. The smaller size of nanoparticles is gaining importance in research for the treatment of various diseases. Aims and objectives: Periodontal disease is the most common disease associated with microbial infection with destruction of supporting structures. The aim of the present study is compare the antimicrobial efficacy of plants of lythraceae family with hiora mouthwash in subjects with chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods: A total of 90 subjects were taken and randomly divided into three groups with 30 each. Group 1 received punica mouthwash, group 2 with lawsone mouth wash and group3 hiora mouth wash. Oral rinse technique was performed. Total microbial load and specific aerobic and anaerobic bacteria like Streptococci, staphylococci species, Agregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, and Porphyromonas gingivalis were determined. Subjects were instructed to use given mouth washes twice daily with volume of 5ml/rinse for 30 sec and later post therapeutic samples were collected 1hr and 1week following drug usage and they were evaluated for total microbial load. In this study, the plant Glycyrrhiza glabra was explored for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (SNPs). The SNPs were characterised by ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy, FTIR analysis and scanning electron microscopy. SEM analysis revealed the formation of SNPs of average size of 46 nm with aqueous extract of G. glabra. The SNPs synthesised by aqueous extract of G. glabra showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and significant inhibition to other bacteria and few fungi tested. The SNPs also exhibited potential anti cancer activity. The SNPs was observed to be nontoxic from a concentration of 500 µg/ml in vero cell line. Now a day the exposure of multi-resistance human pathogens has challenged our existing defense to save human being. To minimize such alarming issue, identification of naturally-occurring antimicrobial agents from plant origin has become a realistic and powerful tool to the researchers. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial potential of the ethanolic extracts of different parts of Abelmoschus moschatus (A. moschatus) against some important human bacterial and fungal pathogens. Different parts (leaves, stem bark, fruits pulp and seeds) of A. moschatus were extracted with ethanol to get crude ethanolic leaves (LE), stem bark (SBE), fruits pulp (FPE) and seed extracts (SE). A major part of the total population in developing countries still uses traditional folk medicine obtained from plant resources. Chemical substances used for prevention of dental caries are known to have many side-effects. Thus, natural products should be explored for their anticaries action. Present study evaluate the antimicrobial effect of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Magnifera indica leaves against oral dental pathogens Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus. Ethanolic extract was found to be more effective and dose dependent against both pathogens. Phytochemical and antioxidative study was also performed using various methods of testing on the aqueous and ethanolic extracts for the presence of phenols, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids, tannins and reducing sugar.
