This study was undertaken to investigate the antimicrobial activities of aqueous and ethanol extracts of violet plant, Securideca longepedunculata leaves and root bark extracts against the pathogenic bacteria isolates of Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeroginosa. Disc diffusion method was used for antibacterial testing and Tetracycline drug at 250 mg/ml concentration was used as positive reference standards to determine the sensitivity of the strains. The results of the antibacterial activities revealed that the highest growth inhibition of the tested bacteria was recorded as 8.00±1.00mm at 250 mg/ml, followed by 7.67±1.15mm at 250 mg/ml and the least inhibition was 3.00±2.00mm at 100 mg/ml. The minimum inhibitory concentrations for E. coli and S. typhi were 124 mg/ml and 250 mg/ml respectively. The results showed significant effect (P < 0.05) of antibacterial activity; with the constituents of S. longepedunculata leaves and root bark extracts been used as potential antimicrobial agents in the management of microbial diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria species which may in turn be an alternative to chemical antibiotics....

The disease causing bacteria have evolved the genetic ability to transmit and acquire resistance to drugs used as therapeutic agents. There are millions of micro-organisms around us, amongst 20-25% are non pathogenic. Pathogenic microbes present in the environment around us are responsible for various health related problems. Reducing microbial load to non-pathogenic levels may be the purpose of traditional fumigation techniques like Dhoopana, Homa, and Havana etc. This is also evident from Ayurvedic literature wherein fumigation is indicated for sterilisation of operation theatres as well as labour theatres and also in wound management. Taking all these into consideration, in present study an attempt is made to estimate anti microbial effect of Dhoopana of an indigenous fumigation formulation ‘DHUP’. Two rooms of same size which are in routine usage in almost similar fashion were selected for the study. One room served as control without any intervention. The present study was concerned with phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of Datura stramonium seeds and its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The methanolic extract was prepared by using Soxhlet apparatus. The result of phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of Datura stramonium seeds shows presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, amino acids, tannins, saponins, carbohydrates and terpenoids. The methanolic extract reduced the concentration of DPPH free radical with an efficacy near to that of standard antioxidant Gallic acid, but less than BHT. The IC50 value for methanolic extract was 0.82mg/ml. The Nitric oxide activity of methanolic extract was also close to the Gallic acid. The IC50 value obtained for the methanolic extract was 0.70mg/ml. The antibacterial activity was detected by agar well diffusion method against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphyloceceus aureus.
