The pharmacological activity of Withenia somnifera commonly called Ashwagandha, a herb having multi-medicinal properties, was investigated against carbofuran exposed hepatic anomalies in the air breathing fish Clarias batrachus. Fishes were exposed to 1 mg/L carbofuran for three weeks to induce the toxic effects. These fishes were then fed with Withenia somnifera root extract mixed pelleted feed @ 10% of the total feed ingredients for the next 6th and 8th week respectively. The histopathological examination of hepatic tissues was done on light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Major changes attributed to the hepatic cells after carbofuran treatment showed irregular shape of hepatic cells, increased sinusoidal spaces, rough endoplasmic reticulum, secretary granules, dilated mitochondrial cristae and presence of kupffer cells. Amoeboid nucleus with increased heterochromatin material, granular nucleoplasm and enlargement of nucleolus, were some of the prominent histopathological alteration in the liver tissue after carbofuran toxicity at transmission electron microscope (TEM) level. The histopathological examination of liver cell of carbofuran exposed fish followed by administration of W.somnifera root extract mixed pelleted...

There are some locally available domestic material in our country that can be used in poultry feed. The uses of local material will decrease the feed cost as well as ensure the availability of raw materials. In this investigation we have selected twelve locally available domestic materials that are low cost and nutritious for poultry health. These raw materials play an important role on poultry health. For crude protein estimation we have used manual micro Kjeldahl method. We have applied also micro Kjeldahl automated Foss instrument to measure and compare results of crude protein content of our selected raw materials. Moisture content of these raw materials is also estimated by three different methods, because moisture plays an important role during storing and formulation of poultry feed. In this study it was found that all of the local raw materials contain considerable amount of crude protein. Though all the selected raw materials contain considerable amount of crude protein, among them soya bean meal (SBM) contains higher amount of crude protein...

Epsilon poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) is a nontoxic biopolymer widely used in food and pharmaceutical industry. The present work reports the nutritional requirements for submerged fermentation of Streptomyces noursei NRRL 5126 using a combination of one factor at a time and statistical orthogonal array method. Two-fold increase in ε-PL productivity (74 mg/L) was observed using optimized medium containing glycerol as carbon source along with proteose peptone and ammonium sulphate as nitrogen source. Various metabolic precursors such as amino acids, tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates were investigated for improved production of ε-PL. Four fold increase (74 mg/L to 310 mg/L) in ε-PL production was achieved by incorporation of L-aspartate (2mM) and citric acid (5mM). Fed batch fermentation for ε-PL production with intermittent feeding with glycerol and in combination with metabolic precursors was studied. Fed batch fermentation with intermittent feeding of glycerol gave a maximum yield of 233 mg/L. Productivity was further enhanced and reached a maximum of 408 mg/L by addition of glycerol along with 5 mM citric acid after 24 h and...

Introduction: Mother to Child Transmission of HIV can occur during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding and it accounts for more than 90% of pediatric AIDS. Various studies indicate that the rate of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV is high among infants who were on mixed feeding. UNICEF UNAIDS and WHO recommended that, all women have the right to choose exclusive breastfeeding or exclusive replacement feeding. However, numerous contextual factors can influence mothers in their choices and decisions related to what and how they feed their infants. An understanding of factors that influence women’s adherence to the recommended infant feeding is critical in identifying ductile point’s intervention. Objective: The study aims to explore the experiences of infant feeding practices of HIV positive women who have used Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission service. Method: Qualitative data were collected by the principal investigator using semi structured in-depth interview from 12 HIV Positive mothers who use PMTCT service at the Tikur Anbassa hospital and was analyzed using principles of thematic content analysis....

Background– Breastfeeding and good nutrition for children are essential for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, particularly the goals relating to child survival. Even though, most mothers in Ethiopia breastfeed their babies, they do not always follow the recommendations of the “National Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding”. Objective– The aim of this study was to assess determinants of breastfeeding practices among mothers’ of children aged less than 24 months attending governmental maternal and child health clinics in Mekelle town. Methods– Institution based cross sectional study was carried out among five health facilities selected using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by interviewer administered structured questionnaire and it was entered, cleaned and analyzed by using SPSS for windows version 16.0. The proportion was used to describe the results and it was presented in the form of figures, tables and texts. The binary logistic regression model was used to test the association between dependent and independent variables. Result– A total of 361 mothers with their index child were interviewed. ...
