Naturally occurring non-starch polysaccharides are known for their therapeutic value. This paper describes isolation, characterization and evaluation of glucose lowering potential of one such plant polysaccharide isolated from the leaves of the plant Vitex negundo. It was isolated and characterized using various analytical techniques and biochemical tests which confirmed the presence of carbohydrates and elements such as C, H and O. It demonstrated a reduction in glucose concentration in-vitro, however non-significant in comparison to standards. In-vivo, it was given per orally in fasting male C57 mice at 10, 30 and 100 mg/kg single dose post 30 min of which serum glucose was recorded. Glucose load was given 30 min after administering crude polysaccharide after which serum glucose concentrations were estimated at 15, 30, 60 and 120 min. Obtained results suggest a non-significant reduction in AUC as well as individual glucose levels at all the time points in crude polysaccharide treated animals in comparison to vehicle control in fasting as well as glucose loaded conditions. Thus, the crude polysaccharide isolated...

Polyalthia korinti (Dunal) Benth. & Hook. F. is a rare Indo – Sri Lankan species of Annonaceae family and are traditionally used by tribal people of Ghats region, India for treating several ailments. The number of mature plants and the area of its distribution are too low and this species is placed under the vulnerable critically endangered category. The present study deals with the pharmacognostic and physicochemical evaluations of the leafy part of this plant and was undertaken as an initial step to aid in documentation, quality assurance, proper identification etc. and appropriately to investigate the plant material for its ethanomedicinal claims. Macro and micro morphological parameters of leaf and dried leaves powder were set down following standard procedures recommended by Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Macroscopic study of leaf revealed some of the characteristic features like size, shape and color and in microscopic study internal characteristic features like epidermis, cortex, xylem, phloem, trichomes, and stomata were noted. Physicochemical parameters like total ash value, water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash,...

Intravenous administration of 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) produces severe systemic, dose-related side effects due to its cytotoxic nature, additionally, 5FU is rapidly absorbed from the stomach after oral administration. Therefore a combined floating-bioadhesive tablet (FBT) of 5FU has been developed in order to reduce the dose and associated side effects in other sites of the body. The tablets were prepared by direct compression technique. Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) K15M was used as a release retardant polymer while carbopol-971P, guar gum and sodium alginate were used as bioadhesive polymer. The pre-compression characteristics shown fair flow behaviour and core tablet properties were within the Pharmacopoeia limit. All formulation batches reported satisfactory floating lag time in a range of 125 – 500 sec and remained buoyant for more than 6 h. Kinetics of dissolution data demonstrated that formulation batch FB4, FB9 and FB10 follow Korsmeyer-Peppas model, FB11 follows first-order kinetics; and FB1, FB2, FB3, FB5, FB6, FB7, FB8, FB12 and FB13 follows Higuchi Matrix model. Analysis of the data revealed that formulation batch...

Anxiety affects a large number of the population that creates an economic burden. Various traditional medicines like barbiturates, benzodiazepines and SSRI’s are used as anxiolytics but due to their potential to produce adverse effect on cognition limits their chronic use. Several homeopathic remedies are used for treating anxiety. For the first time this study was designed to determine anxiolytic activity of 30C Argentum nitricum. The remedy was compared with escitalopram. For this purpose several behavioral parameters were analyzed using head dip test, home cage activity, open field test and light and dark test. Distilled water, Argentum nitricum and escitalopram were administered orally to three groups of animals. The effects were recorded after 30th and 60th days of dosing. The results were compared statistically using one way ANOVA and Tuckey test was also being done for the multiple comparisons. The remedy highly significantly decreased the head dips and cage crossings after the 60th day of dosing (p ≤ 0.001). The central squares crossings in the open field apparatus was increased...

The rhizome of Tectaria cicutaria has been used in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of various disorders. Different extracts of the rhizomes of Tectaria cicutaria were subjected to phytochemical analysis, anti-microbial activity and in-vitro anticancer activity. The in-vitro anticancer activity was performed using Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay against various cancer cell lines namely Human Leukemia Cell Line (K562), Human Nasopharyngeal Cancer Cell Line (KB), Human Colon Cancer Cell Line (HT29) and Human Colon Cancer Cell Line (Colo205). Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of bioactive compounds. The total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of ethanolic extract was found significantly higher and showed antimicrobial activity against Proteus vulgaris. Out of the various extracts and cell lines used for studying anticancer activity, the ethanolic extract showed excellent anticancer activity against Human Leukemia Cell Line (K562) with GI50 value 11.9 µg/ml. The present work has for the first time, tried to elucidate the activity of different extracts of Tectaria cicutaria on human cancer cell...
