A laxative formulations are widely used for treatment of constipation. They are classified based on their mechanism of action such as bulk forming, stool softener, osmotic, stimulant and mechanical. Bulk forming laxative is most commonly used laxative which works by absorbing water and swelling in small and large intestine to form soft and bulky stool. Presently available bulk forming laxative gives adverse effects such as stomach pain, discomfort and vomiting due to sudden swelling in stomach. Therefore present work was conducted for study of novel bulk forming laxative and minimization of associated adverse effects. Bulk laxative formulation was prepared from watermelon rind, isabgol husk and pectin. Watermelon rind powder (WRP) was prepared and analyzed for proximate composition, carbohydrate content, functional properties and performed for topography by scanning electron microscope. In the present study, bacteriophage based electrochemical analysis is applied to detect pathogenic E.coli bacteria. Phages are parasites that only infect one specific bacteria, can be useful to identify bacterial contaminants in food, water, etc. Phage has been isolated from various water sources such as waste, stagnant and sewage water by overlay method against host bacteria. Titer of phages was calculated to be 107 pfu/ml using 10-fold dilutions. Morphology and identification of phage was done using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) by staining with Uranyl Acetate. The phage capsid was about 78 nanometers (nm) in diameter with tail of length 527 nm as compared to wild type lambda phage whose head is about 65 nm. Based on the ethno botanical survey and the related literature, 285 solvent extracts from 57 ethno medicinal plants belonging to 55 genera and 34 families were subjected to preliminary screening for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis using agar well diffusion method at concentrations of 5 & 2.5 mg/ml. Among 285 plant extracts, some exhibited very effective activity, some exhibited effective activity, some exhibited moderate and some exhibited weak activity and no activity was observed in some extracts against E. coli and B. subtilis. Among the plants tested, maximum activity was observed in all the solvents extracts of Argemone mexicana, Allium sativum, Lantana camara, Tephrosia purpurea and Withania somnifera. The results of the present study indicate that the extracts of different parts of 57 ethnomedicinal plants have more potential of antibacterial activity and are concentration dependent. In an effort to develop new targets with enhanced antihyperlipidemic activity, seven new inhibitors such as beta-sitosterol, cholesterol, cholesterol sulfate, desmosterol, lathosterol, stigmasterol and cholesterol acetate was targeted using in silico docking experiments with the modeled structure of the Niemann-Pick C2 target gene (NPC2). Garcinia imberti Bourd. a critically endangered tree belongs to the family Clusiaceae found only in India. The phytochemicals and antioxidant studies were carried out for the methanolic extracts of Garcinia imberti leaves and stem bark using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay. Preliminary phytochemical screening of methanolic extracts of Garcinia imberti revealed the presence of various bioactive components like alkaloids, flavanoids, steroids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, terpenoids, resins, carbohydrates and tannins in both leaves and stem bark. The quantitative analysis of phytochemicals of the extracts showed the presence of high amount of tannins (0.92 ± 0.23mg/gm) and alkaloids (0.83 ± 0.48mg/gm) in leaf and high concentration of flavanoids (0.65±0.16mg/gm) and tannins (0.78±1.12mg/gm) in bark extract.
