Density, ρ and viscosity, η of drug of aqueous solution of propylene glycol (PG) (3 m and 7 m) with tert-butanol/2-propanol have been measured over the entire composition range of alkanols at 308.15 K. From this experimental data, excess molar volume, , deviation in viscosity, Δη, and excess Gibbs free energy of activation of viscous flow, ΔG*E have been determined. Positive values of Δη, ΔG*E and negative values of have been observed over the entire composition range in the mixtures studied. The observed positive and negative values of various excess/deviation properties have been attributed to the existence of strong interactions such as geometrical fitting of smaller molecules into the voids created by larger molecules in the liquid mixtures. The excess/deviation properties have been fitted to Redlich–Kister type polynomial and the corresponding standard deviations have been evaluated. The computed partial and excess partial molar volumes data also support the results. The experimental viscosity data of the liquid mixtures investigated have been correlated with viscosity models such as Grunberg and Nissan;...

Sweitenia mahagoni is a natural medicine used to treat various human ailments including diabetes. The present study is a comprehensive approach which targets more than one locus in the diabetic model to enumerate the anti-diabetic potential of Swietenia mahagoni as claimed by folklore. Oral administration of the aqueous extract of the leaf decreased the fasting blood glucose level (155.2±6.7) from its initial value (309.8±10.5) in diabetic rats. There was improvement in the content of innate antioxidant components viz., glutathione (0.570±0.01) when compared to positive control group (0.28±0.02). The activity liver health marker enzymes in the serum were also decreased in the treated group compared to untreated diabetic group. There was also reduction in body mass loss in treated groups. Thus it can be proposed that Sweitenia mahagoni leaf has potent anti-diabetic activity and the effect may be mediated through increasing the antioxidant strength, improving glycogen content in liver, balancing the lipid components in serum, decreasing the muscle protein catabolism and improved overall...

A laxative formulations are widely used for treatment of constipation. They are classified based on their mechanism of action such as bulk forming, stool softener, osmotic, stimulant and mechanical. Bulk forming laxative is most commonly used laxative which works by absorbing water and swelling in small and large intestine to form soft and bulky stool. Presently available bulk forming laxative gives adverse effects such as stomach pain, discomfort and vomiting due to sudden swelling in stomach. Therefore present work was conducted for study of novel bulk forming laxative and minimization of associated adverse effects. Bulk laxative formulation was prepared from watermelon rind, isabgol husk and pectin. Watermelon rind powder (WRP) was prepared and analyzed for proximate composition, carbohydrate content, functional properties and performed for topography by scanning electron microscope. Further, effect of pH on swelling index of WRP was studied at pH 1.3, pH 4.5, pH 6 and pH 7.4. Bulk laxative formulations were developed by varying the concentration of WRP, isabgol and pectin. Developed formulations were evaluated for...

In the present study, bacteriophage based electrochemical analysis is applied to detect pathogenic E.coli bacteria. Phages are parasites that only infect one specific bacteria, can be useful to identify bacterial contaminants in food, water, etc. Phage has been isolated from various water sources such as waste, stagnant and sewage water by overlay method against host bacteria. Titer of phages was calculated to be 107 pfu/ml using 10-fold dilutions. Morphology and identification of phage was done using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) by staining with Uranyl Acetate. The phage capsid was about 78 nanometers (nm) in diameter with tail of length 527 nm as compared to wild type lambda phage whose head is about 65 nm. Plaque reaction activity was observed within 4- 6 hrs against host bacteria by spot test. It is therefore proposed that the isolated phage is lambda like virus and lytic life cycle. Bacteriophages are immobilized onto platinum (pt) electrode by self-assembled molecular monolayer (SAM) and electrochemical impedance analysis performed for a rapid and specific detection of...

Based on the ethno botanical survey and the related literature, 285 solvent extracts from 57 ethno medicinal plants belonging to 55 genera and 34 families were subjected to preliminary screening for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis using agar well diffusion method at concentrations of 5 & 2.5 mg/ml. Among 285 plant extracts, some exhibited very effective activity, some exhibited effective activity, some exhibited moderate and some exhibited weak activity and no activity was observed in some extracts against E. coli and B. subtilis. Among the plants tested, maximum activity was observed in all the solvents extracts of Argemone mexicana, Allium sativum, Lantana camara, Tephrosia purpurea and Withania somnifera. The results of the present study indicate that the extracts of different parts of 57 ethnomedicinal plants have more potential of antibacterial activity and are concentration dependent. The demonstration of broad spectrum of the above said 5 plants may help to discover new chemical classes of antibiotic substances that could serve as selective agents for infectious disease chemotherapy...
