The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Musa sapientum methanolic fruit extract on volume of gastric juice and pepsin activity in aspirin induced peptic ulcer in albino rats. The extract was prepared by percolation method. Volume of gastric juice was estimated by the method of Deshpande SS et al (2003). Pepsin activity was studied with the methods of Debnath PK et al (1974) and Lowry OH et al (1951). Twenty four healthy albino rats of 100-200 gms were divided into 4 groups of six animals each. Group I or control (3% gum acacia, 5 ml/kg orally for 7 days). Group II or experimental control (aspirin 400 mg/kg orally single dose on the 7th day). Group III or MSE group (MSE 100 mg/kg orally for 7 days and aspirin 400 mg/kg orally single dose on the 7th day). Group IV or standard (ranitidine 150 mg/kg orally for 7 days and aspirin 400 mg/kg orally single dose on the 7th day). On 8th day the stomachs of...

Kushta literally means burning of drugs of metallic, mineral or animal origin into their ash. Qalai (tin) based Unani compound formulation Kushta qalai (KQ) is used since antiquity for the treatment of various ailments. Although it is used on consistent basis by Hakims but at present there are no scientific data available about its quality control parameters. So, in this research article an emphasis is given on preparation and physicochemical assessment of KQ using classical as well as modern scientific parameters with an eye towards its standardization. In finished product floating test, grain floating test, thumb finger test and fineness test were positive. The mean value of bulk density and tapped density were 1.32±0.00gm/ml and 2.24±0.02gm/ml respectively. Hausner’s Ratio and Compressibility Index were 1.77±0.02 and 44.15±0.86% respectively. pH in 1% and 10% solution were 10.47±0.00 and 11.17±0.02 respectively. Loss of weight on drying was 0.019±0.00%. Total ash, acid insoluble ash, water soluble ash and water insoluble ash were 96.47±0.07%, 36.87±0.06%, 5.1±0.10% and 91.64±0.20% respectively. The water soluble extractive value...

Purpose: To investigate membrane stabilizing activity and antioxidant activity off different extracts of leaves of Sida cordata and Rhododendron arboreum. Methods: Preliminary phytochemical analysis of different extracts of leaves of Sida cordata and Rhododendron arboreum were performed for presence of phytoconstituents. In vitro membrane stabilizing activity was done by using RBC membrane stabilising activity and antioxidant activity was done by using DPPH method. Results: Preliminary phytochemical analysis showed that methanol extract are very rich in phytoconstituents as they showed the presence of alkaloid, carbohydrate, glycosides, proteins and amino acid, Phenolic compounds. All extract are investigated for their in vitro membrane stabilizing activity and antioxidant effect. Methanol and acetone extract of Sida cordata and Rhododendron arboreum showed maximum effect in comparison with other extracts. Conclusion: From the above study it could be concluded that the leaves of Sida cordata and Rhododendron arboreum showed protective effect on inflammation and...

In this study, the methanol extract of bark of Cordia dichotoma Forst., belonging to the family Boraginaceae was prepared by successive extraction procedure ( petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, methanol) in soxhlet apparatus and subsequently, the extract was evaluated for its phytoconstituents and pharmacological activity. Comparatively, higher yield (7.11%) of methanol extract was obtained. Phytochemical tests revealed the presence of alkaloid, glycosides, proteins, amino acids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and saponins in the extract. The methanol extract was evaluated for its in vitro antioxidant property by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay; sodium nitroprusside generated nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).Total phenolic content and total flavonoid contents were also carried out. The extract showed IC50 values of 62.46 µg/mL, 48.75µg/mL, 63.5 µg/mL for DPPH free radical, total phenolic content and flavonoid content, respectively. The current study is carried out to investigate the free radical scavenging potential of methanolic extract of bark of Cordia dichotoma using in-vitro models. These models demonstrate antioxidant activity in a concentration dependent...

Comparative antibacterial study of ethyl acetate extract of Cuscuta reflexa parasite grown on Cassia fistula and Ficus benghalensis was performed using disc diffusion method. Four different concentrations, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg/ml of ethyl acetate extract of Cuscuta reflexa grown in two different host plants were prepared and tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcous aureus and Salmonella typhi in disc diffusion method. Cuscuta reflexa extract from both the host trees showed effect but difference in their activity to the test organisms was found. Significantly higher activity was shown by Cuscuta reflexa grown on Cassia fistula against all the pathogenic bacteria and produced zones of inhibition ranging from 14.18-22.5 mm at 100 mg/ml concentration but extract was found inactive against Salmonella typhi at all tested concentration. In the same way Cuscuta reflexa grown on Ficus benghalensis was active against all the bacterial strains and produced zones of inhibition ranging from 10.4-12.98 mm at 100 mg/ml concentration but extract was found inactive against Escherichia coli at all...
