Ethnobotanical study was conducted in district Rajouri, Jammu And Kashmir State aiming at identifying plants used to treat chest diseases mainly related to respiratory system. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to interview members of the tribal population including traditional healers, herb sellers, and other villagers. The plant parts used as well as the modes of preparation and administration were recorded. Thirty one plant species belonging to twenty four families were collected and identified by their vernacular and scientific names. The Asteraceae, Acanthaceae, Pinaceae were the most represented family with three species each, followed by the Anacrdiaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Fabaceae with two species each. All the remaining 15 families were represented by one species each. The plant part most frequently used to treat respiratory diseases in the study was reported as Root followed by leaf, flower, fruit, bark and seed. Also many other plant parts including rhizomes, galls, buds, resins and latex were found in use in various formulations for chest diseases...

Three simple, rapid, precise and accurate spectrophotometric methods have been developed for simultaneous analysis of Tolperisone Hydrochloride (TOL) and Diclofenac Sodium (DIC) in their combined dosage form. Method A, Simultaneous equation method (Vierodt’s method) applies measurement of absorptivities at two wavelengths, 261.00 nm (λmax of Tolperisone Hydrochloride) and 279.00 nm, (λmax of Diclofenac Sodium) in zero order spectra. The concentrations can be calculated from the derived equations. Method B, Q-Absorbance equation method. It involves formation of Q-absorbance equation at 233.50 nm (isoabsorptive point) and 261.00 nm (λmax of Tolperisone Hydrochloride) in zero order spectra. Method C, Zero crossing first derivative spectrophotometry involves measurement of absorbance at 249.20 nm (for Tolperisone Hydrochloride) and 227.40 nm (for Diclofenac Sodium) in first derivative spectra. Developed methods were validated according to ICH guidelines. The calibration graph follows Beer’s law in the range of 6.0 to 18.0 μg/ml for Tolperisone Hydrochloride and 2.0 to 6.0 μg/ml for Diclofenac Sodium with R square value greater than 0.999. Accuracy of all methods was determined by recovery...

Inflammation plays an imperative role in pathophysiology of various diseases. Sida rhombifolia L. (Malvaceae), commonly known as Atibala is traditionally used for numerous medicinal purposes in India. The present study was carried out to demonstrate the in vivo anti-inflammatory effect of aqueous and ethanolic extract of Sida rhombifolia L. root using Wistar rats by carrageenan induced acute inflammatory paw edema method. Preliminary phytochemical screening and acute toxicity test were performed for aqueous and ethanolic extracts. Both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Sida rhombifolia L. root at the dose rate of 200, 400 and 600 mg/ kg body weight were evaluated for anti-inflammatory property. Indomethacin at the rate of 5 mg/ kg body weight was employed as reference drug. Phytochemical screening of aqueous and ethanolic extracts revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and glycoside. Ethanolic extract was also indicated for the presence of steroids, alkaloids and terpenes. Acute toxicity testing upto 2000 mg/ kg body weight did not show any toxicity in rats. Sida rhombifolia L. root extract...

Parthenium hysterophorus L. is commonly known as “Gajar ghas” in Hindi and belongs to family Composite. It is an annual herb erect up to 1.5 m in hight. Its stems is branched and covered with trichomes. Its leaves are pale green, branched and covered with soft fine hairs. In Homoeopathy system, allergies caused by Parthenium can be treated by a drug prepared from Parthenium. Root decoction is useful in dysentery. In the present paper, we report the isolation and structurel elucidation of a new allelochemical identified (I) as 3 , 5, 7, 4′ tetrahydroxy-3′-methoxyflavone-3-O-b-L-galactopyranosyl-(1→3)-O-b-D-arabinopyranosyl-7-O-a-L-rhamnopyranoside alongwith two known compounds Lutexin (II) and Cirsilineol (III) from methanolic extract of the stems of this plant by several colour reactions, chemical degradations and spectral...

The seaweeds are economically valuable resources, used as food, fodder, fertilizer and medicine and thus useful to mankind in many ways. In the present study, Kappaphycus alvarezii, a marine alga, has been analysed for the presence of bioactive products using three solvent extracts. Antimicrobial activity was also done using the same extracts of seaweed. The results revealed that the selected seaweed has active secondary metabolites and also exhibited antimicrobial activity, mainly in the methanolic extract of Kappaphycus...
