The use of bronchodilators has been increasing for the past few decades. The literatures have reported a high rate of adverse events. It has also been found out that beta-agonists are associated with an increased morbidity and mortality rate. Respiratory tolerance develops due to regular use of beta-agonists, which are widely prescribed in asthma and bronchiolitis also is of major concern. Objective: To evaluate the rational use of bronchodilator drugs by analyzing the appropriateness of the prescription. Methodology: Prospective observational study. Study site: A 500-bedded Multispecialty Tertiary care Teaching Hospital. Result: In the study population of 133 patients male children were found to be more (58.6 %) than the female children (41.4%) Most of the bronchodilators were prescribed for infants (48.1%). Of the 133 pediatric patients, the major prescription was for SABA (99.2%). Of which the major prescription was for salbutamol (63.2%). Most of the Children with asthma were prescribed with combination therapy of salbutamol and ipratropium (81.3%). In WALRI, patients were prescribed with salbutamol (40.4%) and in acute...

In the present study, natural gums (Hibiscus rosa – sinensis mucilage and Modified gum karaya) was investigated as superdisintegrants for use in fast dissolving tablet formulations containing amlodipine besylate. Fast dissolving tablets of amlodipine besylate was formulated using different concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) of natural superdisintegrant viz; Hibiscus Rosa – sinensis mucilage and modified gum karaya. Prepared tablets were evaluated for thickness, hardness, friability, uniformity of weight, disintegration time, wetting time and dissolution study. The formulated tablets had good appearance and better drug release properties. The best formulation of Hibiscus rosa – sinensis mucilage (FHR5) and modified gum karaya (FMGK5) shows shorter disintegration time and shows 100% release is selected as optimized formulation. Hence, the present study revealed that this natural superdisintegrants (Hibiscus rosa – sinensis mucilage and modified gum karaya) showed better disintegrating property than the most widely used synthetic superdisintegrants. Studies showed that naturally obtained polymers are more beneficial without any side effects. Optimized formulation was subjected to stability studies as per ICH guidelines and...

Oligohydramnios means the fetus is in a compromised condition. Ante partum amniotic fluid index (A.F.I.) assessment is one of the reliable, good predictor and standard technique for assessment of fetal well-being in antenatal period. In the present study 25 cases of Oligohydramnios in the third trimester were given intravenous amino acid in 1000cc of 10% fructodex drip on 1st day and the amino acid infusion drip in 500 ml of 10% fructodex daily till 6 days. After that biweekly till patient deliver or till term. There were 4 cases of severe Oligohydramnios and 21 cases of moderate Oligohydramnios at the time of their first visit. After amino acid infusion therapy, on repeat ultrasonography, 9 (36%) cases patients with moderate Oligohydramnios had improved amniotic fluid index (AFI) to normal whereas two patients with severe Oligohydramnios had improved A.F.I. to moderate Oligohydramnios and remaining 12 and two patients of moderate and severe Oligohydramnios group patients did not show any changes in A.F.I. Maximum cases delivered...

The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial activity of crude leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. The leaves of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. were taken from three different regions of India such as SR-1 from South India, SR-2 from Rajasthan and SR-3 from Haryana. Antimicrobial suspectibility testing of ethanolic and aqueous leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. were performed against 3 bacterial strains (E. Coli, Bacillus substilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and against 2 fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans) by Agar well diffusion method on nutrient agar medium. The proposed comparative study revealed that the ethanolic extract prepared from the sample SR-2 taken from Rajasthan found to be most effective against all microbial strains. This is the first such comparative report on antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. taken from three different regions of ...

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as “carbohydrate intolerance resulting in hyperglycemia of variable severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy, whether or not insulin is used and regardless of whether diabetes persists after pregnancy. There is evidence that asymptomatic hyperglycemia during pregnancy leads to important morbidity in the mother and foetus. Hence, early detection and treatment of GDM will definitely reduce the complications and bring down the morbidity. Methods: Test was performed using 100 gm oral glucose. Blood samples were taken at 1hr, 2hr and 3hr as per standard protocol. Blood glucose was measured by glucose oxidase enzymatic method and all the values were tabulated and plotted on a graph. Interpretation was done using Carpenter and Coustan Criteria. Results: Out of the 96 women, 15 women were diagnosed as GDM. 5 out of them showed atypical pattern in OGTT curve. Similar such patterns were also seen in 5 normal subjects. Conclusion: In GDM with mild to moderate elevation in fasting plasma glucose, fasting plasma insulin is elevated...
