Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Many of the cucurbitaceae plants traditionally reported to possess antitumor activity. The present study was carried out to evaluate the anticancer activity for different extracts of Lagenaria siceraria Fruit. The present research work had carried out on laboratory level assay to avoid the use of different animal models. Preliminary phytochemical tests of successive extraction of Lagenaria siceraria fruit powder had performed to find out the different chemical moieties as per standard procedures. Preliminary anticancer screening by exposure of different extracts on Onion Root model was carried out to find out the lead extract which showed the promising cell growth inhibitory activity. The antimitotic assay by onion root method was selected because this is easy to done and give fastest promising results. Onion was selected for the antimitotic assay which shows the root growth inhibition that compared with standard antimitotic drug (Colchicine100PPM and 100 PPM). n-butanol extract of Lagenaria siceraria fruit powder shows most promising anticancer activity than other extracts...

Panchagavya, a classical Ayurvedic preparation, was evaluated for its antioxidant potential by HPTLC-DPPH bioautography method as well as assays for Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), DPPH – free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and Superoxide radical scavenging activity. In addition total phenolic content was also estimated which was in fairly good amount. HPTLC-DPPH bioautography study revealed the presence of several antioxidant compounds in Panchagavya. In all the assays performed, it showed considerable antioxidant activity. On comparison of the data of three different batches of the samples studied, it showed 98.3 – 99.8% correlation between total phenolic content, FRAP and DPPH...

The present study was designed to evaluate the anti ulcer effect of Basella alba in aspirin induced ulcerated rats. Aspirin induced ulcer was revealed by increased ulcer index, decreased gastric pH, increase in the levels of pepsin, Thio barbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS). Lipid hydroperoxides and decrease in the levels of enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidants. Treatment with the plant extract brought back the altered parameters to...

The study was designed to scientifically evaluate the effect of alchoholic extract of Cyperus rotundus rhizomes, a traditional medicinal herb, on isoproterenol-induce myocardial necrosis in rats model. The albino wistar rats were divided into five different groups with six animal in each group. Group I serves as a control group, group II were given isoproterenol (85 mg/kg s.c) for 2 days while Group III was treated with metoprolol (10 mg/kg) for 28 days and isoproterenol on last 2 days. This group serves as standard group and its effect was used for comparison with that of test drug (Cyperus rotundus extract). Group IV and V were given Cyperus rotundus rhizome extract (300 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg respectively) for 28 days and isoproterenol on last 29th and 30th day. The level of enzymes transaminases (aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Cretinine kinase (CK) were estimated in serum and the extent of necrosis was studied by grading. Isoproterenol significantly increased the activities of CK, LDH and the transaminases in serum....

Background and Purpose: Integrated teaching is new in pharmacology. In the present study, evaluation and comparison of integrated teaching, conventional theory teaching and tutorial has been done. Material and methods: Ten pre and post tests were conducted each for integrated teaching, theory class and tutorial for 126 students. Student’s attitude towards these teaching methods and bedside clinical teaching were analysed. Results: There was significant improvement in post test scores when compared with pre test scores in all three types of teachings. When post and pre test’s differences were compared, conventional theory teaching was significantly effective than integrated teaching which in turn was significantly effective than tutorial. Student’s attitude tests revealed merits and demerits of theory class, tutorial, integrated teaching and bedside clinical teaching. Conclusion: Integrated teaching will promote active learning. Conventional theory and tutorial classes are popular due to their easiness in acquiring and consolidation of the knowledge respectively. These findings will help in further educational...
