The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the antimicrobial activity of crude leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. The leaves of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. were taken from three different regions of India such as SR-1 from South India, SR-2 from Rajasthan and SR-3 from Haryana. Antimicrobial suspectibility testing of ethanolic and aqueous leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. were performed against 3 bacterial strains (E. Coli, Bacillus substilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and against 2 fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans) by Agar well diffusion method on nutrient agar medium. The proposed comparative study revealed that the ethanolic extract prepared from the sample SR-2 taken from Rajasthan found to be most effective against all microbial strains. This is the first such comparative report on antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. taken from three different regions of ...

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as “carbohydrate intolerance resulting in hyperglycemia of variable severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy, whether or not insulin is used and regardless of whether diabetes persists after pregnancy. There is evidence that asymptomatic hyperglycemia during pregnancy leads to important morbidity in the mother and foetus. Hence, early detection and treatment of GDM will definitely reduce the complications and bring down the morbidity. Methods: Test was performed using 100 gm oral glucose. Blood samples were taken at 1hr, 2hr and 3hr as per standard protocol. Blood glucose was measured by glucose oxidase enzymatic method and all the values were tabulated and plotted on a graph. Interpretation was done using Carpenter and Coustan Criteria. Results: Out of the 96 women, 15 women were diagnosed as GDM. 5 out of them showed atypical pattern in OGTT curve. Similar such patterns were also seen in 5 normal subjects. Conclusion: In GDM with mild to moderate elevation in fasting plasma glucose, fasting plasma insulin is elevated...

Background: Since prescribing is the first and foremost component in the process of using drugs, it is a vital element in rational drug use. The concept of rational prescribing requires that the prescriber follows correct and complete prescription writing. Objective: To assess prescribers adherence to the basic standards of prescription order writing in Serbo and Assendao health centers. Methodology: In this retrospective study, a total of 424 prescriptions were selected as a sample from the two health centers using systematic random sampling technique and data was collected using pre-tested format from January 3 to 28,2007. Result: In 3.3%, 4.7%, 70.8%, and 4.7%, 18.9%, 82.1% of the prescriptions, respectively, Age, Sex and card no of patients were not recorded. In 24.5%, 33% and 55.2%, 93.9% of the prescriptions date and signature of the prescriber were omitted, respectively. In 85% of the prescriptions, address of the patient was omitted in Serbo health center, but none of the prescriptions contained address of the patient in Assendabo health center. Out of the prescribed...

In the present study, Polygala rosmarinifolia whole plant was extracted with ethanol and evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in rats using a carrageenan induced paw edema method. Ethanol extract exhibits potent anti-inflammatory activity at 200mg/kg at 3rd hr after administration is compared with reference standard drug, Indomethacin. Observed pharmacological activity in the present study provides scientific validation of ethnomedicinal use of this plant in treating acute...

The accumulation tendencies of different classes of compounds within the related Rutaceae genera and species are well documented, considering different populations and plant individuals. Aegle marmelos is one species which has been largely exploited in India in indigenous systems of medicine as a potential herbal medicine for abdominal disorders. The species has been listed as Vulnerable due to its destructive harvest. In this paper, the secondary metabolites of Aegle marmelos are compared with two other arboreal species, Feronia limonia and Chloroxylon sweitenia. This is an unexploited field of research in Natural Products and Pharmacology which offers great potential to identify species which can be used as substitutes or alternates in indigenous medicine. Use of alternate species requires further understanding of the pharmacology; however, a profiling of the compounds of the three species reveals that the chemical composition is almost similar, the other members having increased levels of the metabolites, in addition to newer compounds, suggesting their use as...
