Persistent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) attributable to resistant strains has increased the burden leading to poor quality of life to the patients. Drugs of herbal origin have been identified as potential sources of new anti-tubercular agents for the treatment of this disease and emerging resistant strains of the bacterium. In this research, therefore, five herbs/plants that have been indicated in the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the traditional/folklore medicine were evaluated for their potential use in the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Garcinia kola, Picralina nitida, Mitracarpus villosus, Vernonia amygdalina and Securidaca longipedunculata were assessed for their anti-tubercular activity using standard methods. G. kola and V. amygdalina having better activity were assessed for their synergistic activity. Doses displaying in-vivo activity were established. The activity of the synergistic mix with Rifampicin was evaluated in a resistant Mtb strain. Two plants; G. kola (MIC of 125 mg/ml) and V. amygdalina (MIC of 250 mg/ml) performed better than others. The synergistic ratios of V. amygdalina, G. kola of 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 and 8:1...

Among various subtypes of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is aggressive breast cancer. Doxorubicin is the standard therapy used for treating TNBC, but poses a risk of severe adverse effects affecting patient compliance. Hence, there is a need for therapy that reduces the adverse effect and increase compliance for better overall pathological complete response (pCR). Metformin, widely used as an anti-diabetic, has gained momentum for its preventive potential and delaying various cancers, including breast cancer, owing to its high safety and better tolerability. Hesperidin, commonly found in citrus fruits, is an integral part of daily diet and consumed worldwide. The objective of the current study was to investigate the potentiation of anti-proliferative effect of doxorubicin using metformin and hesperidinon MDA-MB-468 human breast cancer cell line. The IC50 concentration of doxorubicin (1 µM) was combined with non-toxic doses of metformin (0.5, 1, and 2 mM) and hesperidin (5, 10, and 20 µM). Metformin (1 mM) and hesperidin (5 µM) in combination with doxorubicin (1 µM) inhibited the migration of...

Background: In drug design development, Alanine racemase grabbed researchers’ attention as it is a potential target for many antimicrobial agents due to its imperative role in bacterial cell wall synthesis. The irresponsible binge eating of antibiotics leads to drug resistance is a key issue of concern for the researchers. The development of multidrug resistance, responsible for causing immense human suffering, demands a renewed attempt to be made to seek antibacterial agents effective against pathogenic bacteria resistant to current antibiotics. This highlights the urgent need for a new and improved antibacterial agent with a new mode of action for use in clinical practice. Method: In the present work, gallic acid derivatives were designed and docked against the active site of the enzyme Alanine racemase (PDB code: 1SFT) using Schrodinger maestro module. Ligands with highest dock score were selected and subjected to ADMET analysis with the help of Qikprop module to study the pharmacokinetic profile of the drug candidate. Result and Conclusion: Based upon computational analysis, compounds (8, 11, 7, 9...

Hydroethanolic extract of the Cedrela odorata (HeECo) showed hypolipidemic potential in diabetic rats. Thus, we evaluate the hypolipidemic effect and the mechanism of the action of the HeECo in a rat model of ethanol-induced hyperlipidemia. Male Wistar rats are divided: normolipidemic (C); hyperlipidemic non-treated (Hl); hyperlipidemic treated with HeECo 500 mg.kg-1 (HlCo); and hyperlipidemic treated with fenofibrate 200 mg.kg-1 (HlFen). The relative weight, lipid content of some tissues, serum lipid profile, enzymatic activity and content of lipase lipoprotein (LPL) in retroperitoneal white adipose tissue (retWAT) were measured. Protein content of SREBP-1c and enzyme activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), malic enzyme and ATP-citrate lyase (ACL) were measured in the liver. We observed an increase in the levels of triacylglycerol, total cholesterol and VLDL in the Hl group that the C group. The HlCo group showed reduced serum parameters, relative weight, lipid content and LPL activity in retWAT, that the Hl group. We observed lower activity in G6PD and ACL in the HlCo group that the Hl group. We suggest that...

Purpose: Drug use studies are essential in health, as the research provides insight into drug use in communities. The current study aimed to evaluate the prescription pattern of drugs prescribed in a private general hospital’s out-patient department (OPD),using prescribing indicators developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Methods: The study was a prospective, observational, cross-sectional study performed at an OPD of a private general hospital located in the Western region of India from October 2020 to March 2021 for 6 months using WHO prescribing indicators. Microsoft Excel and SPSS Version 26.0 were used to capture and analyze the data of the study. Results: A total of 619 prescriptions were captured and evaluated in this study, and the total number of drugs prescribed was 2023 drugs. The average number of drugs prescribed per encounter was 3.3 (SD = 1.1). The percentage of drugs prescribed by using generic name of the drug was 2.8% and the percentage of encounters with an antibiotic and an injection prescribed was 42.3% and 5.3%, respectively....
