This study was carried out to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of Abies webbiana and Berberis aristate Linn. The study aims to assess the antimicrobial activity and determine the zone of inhibition of extracts on some bacterial and fungal strains. The extracts determined the antimicrobial activity using the agar disc diffusion method. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of extracts (5, 25, 50, 100, 250 μg/ml, and so on) of A. webbiana and B. aristata were tested against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and four fungal strains: Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Penicillium notatum and Penicillium funiculus. The zone of inhibition of extracts was compared with that of a standard like ciprofloxacin for antibacterial activity and griseofulvin for antifungal activity. The results showed that the remarkable inhibition of the bacterial as well as fungal growth was shown against the tested organisms. The phytochemical analyses of the plant extracts indicated the presence of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, steroids, glycosides, anthraquinones, coumarin, saponins, gum, protein, and amino acids. The antimicrobial...

Any errors in medical dispensing may threaten the patient’s life. Hence, this research aimed to compare and evaluate the dispensing errors and to identify its prevalence and severity through the safety reporting system (SRS) and providing feedback at “King Abdulaziz Medical City, Central Region (KAMC-CR)” and “King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital (KASCH)”.The KAMC-SRS was used to collect data on dispensing errors. In order to analyze the dispensing errors, the reasons for the errors were reviewed and the errors were classified. In order to study and categorize the medication error data, the “National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (NCCMERP)” index was utilized. Out of 3017 safety reports submitted to the SRS during 2017, the number of dispensing errors recorded was 448 (14.84% of the errors). Out of 2381 safety reports submitted to the SRS in 2018, approximately 18% of dispensing errors were recorded, which were significant (p < 0.001). Generally, “KAMC and KASCH” pharmacies showed relatively low percentages of dispensing errors that did not exceed 0.01% of...

Floating drug delivery systems can increase the gastric retention time by manufacturing the systems with a density less than the gastric contents of the stomach. This causes the system to float over the gastric contents in the stomach without affecting the gastric emptying rate for a prolonged period. Glimepiride was selected as a model drug to increase oral bioavailability and efficacy. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and Carbopol, which are hydrophilic swellable polymers, govern the drug release from the prepared floating tablets. Buoyancy was achieved by using sodium bicarbonate as a gas-generating agent. The optimized formulation F5 showed a drug release of 42.14% within 12 hrs, whereas the floating lag time was found to be 50 seconds. The formulation variations were made in HPMC and Carbopol concentrations. The dissolution study revealed that sustain release profile can be achieved by increasing polymers concentrations in the formulation. The current study confirms that HPMC and Carbopol with sodium bicarbonate as a gas generating agent can develop floating systems that can provide controlled drug release for...

Present study reported a simple, rapid, eco-friendly and economical method for efficient production of AgNPs utilizing Manilkara zapota (M. zapota) extract. UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis was employedto ascertain the formation and stability of the synthesized AgNPs. The AgNPs were further characterized using TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), DLS, FT-IR, and XRD. The AgNPs exhibited a clear SPR band around 420 nm and were stable upto 6 months as confirmed during UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis. The nanoparticles were spherical in shape with a 10-15 nm size range, as evidenced by TEM results. FT-IR spectral studies demonstrated the presence of biomolecules such as phenols, amino acids, carboxylic acids, and aldehyde in the fruit extract, which might be responsible as reducing and capping agents during the formation of nanoparticles. From the DLS studies, the particles were found to have an average diameter of 90.28 nm, zeta potential value of -24.8 mV, and polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.147. The intense XRD pattern clearly revealed the face center cubic (FCC) structure as crystalline silver. The AgNPs efficiently...

Introduction: The seeds of Aegle marmelos (bael) are less explored for their therapeutic activity; cytotoxic activity of bael seeds was yet to be studied. The present study aims at finding the cytotoxic activity of the successive extracts and the flavonoid fraction from the methanolic extract of the seeds. Methods: The extracts were prepared using solvents (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water) in increasing order of their polarity. Anti-oxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging assay, nitric oxide scavenging assay, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Flavonoid fractions were obtained by thin-layer chromatography of the flavonoid-rich fraction prepared from the total methanolic extract. Human colon cancer cell line (HT 29), human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), human lung cancer cell line (A-549) were used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the extracts and the flavonoid fractions. Results: Various phytochemicals like alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and phenols, steroids, and saponins were detected in phytochemical investigation of the extract. Ethyl acetate fraction showed comparable DPPH radical scavenging activity and...
