Environmental factors influence plant growth, morphology, as well as nature and quantity of secondary metabolites. Modification of abiotic factors during plant growth can impact the production of bioactive phytoconstituents. A six-month field study was carried out to assess the effect of different abiotic stresses on bioactive compounds (flavonoids, phenols, quercetin), acetylcholine sterase (AChE) inhibition and antioxidant capacity of two selected Allium species i.e. Allium cepa L. (AC) & Allium sativum L. (AS; family Amaryllidaceae). AC and AS plants were grown for six months (from November 2018 to April 2019) on three different soil types (i.e. black, red, clay-loamy) and various stresses (salinity, water deprivation, flooding, fertilizer, metal, shade) were applied on the plants. At the end of the season, plants were collected, dried and plant yield was determined. Hydro alcoholic extracts of all samples were prepared. Extract yield, total flavonoids (TFC), total phenols (TPC), AChE inhibition, and antioxidant activity were determined in all the extracts. The results show the varied response of AC & AS plants to different soil...

The study was designed to evaluate the anti-fatigue activity and biochemical effects of nootkatone in Balb-C mice. Thirty-six mice weighing 33-41g were randomly divided into six groups; 1) sedentary group, 2) sedentary group fed with 50 mg/kg nootkatone, 3) control group (exercise control), 4) exercise with 10mg/kg nootkatone group, 5) exercise with 25mg/kg nootkatone and 6) exercise with 50mg/kg nootkatone. Nootkatone was administered orally to mice from all groups. The anti-fatigue activity was assessed using a treadmill running test. Biochemical parameters were also evaluated. Nootkatone was found to increase run time on the treadmill and reverse the fatigue-induced reduction in liver/muscle glycogen, in addition to reducing lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and lactic acid. Moreover, nootkatone increases the activity of enzymes such as catalases, SOD and decreases lipid peroxidation. The data suggested that the nootkatone could extend the treadmill exercise duration in mice, as well as increase the tissue glycogen contents and decrease the malondialdehyde (MDA), lactic acid, BUN, CK and LDH levels. There was a...

Extract of Adhatoda vasica leaves has been used to treat various diseases and disorders in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Effect of ethanolic extract of Adhatoda vasica against gamma radiation-induced changes in terms of histological alterations in testes of Swiss albino mice were studied at post-irradiation intervals between 1-30 days. Mice exposed to 6 Gy gamma radiation showed radiation-induced sickness, including changes in the histology of testes. When ethanolic leaf extract of Adhatoda vasica was given orally at a dose of 900 mg/kg, body weight prior to irradiation showed significant protection. Leaf extract of Adhatoda vasica was also reported for the protective role in the spleen of Swiss albino mice exposed to 6 Gy γ-radiation. Mice were divided into four groups i.e., group (i) containing normal mice served as a control for each experimental stage; group (ii) mice given 900 mg/kg body wt. of Adhatoda vasica extract orally for 15 days; group (iii) mice exposed to gamma radiation (6 Gy) and group (iv) mice given Adhatoda vasica extract orally for...

The present study was undertaken to study the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous extract of Impatiens balsamina leaves in suitable animal models. The leaves of Impatiens balsamina were extracted with distilled water using the Soxhlet apparatus. The extract thus obtained was screened for anti-inflammatory activity using Cotton pellet implantation method, Granuloma pouch method, and formaldehyde arthritis method in albino rats. The aqueous extract of the plant produced significant inhibition of granuloma formation, significant inhibition of exudate formation and significantly inhibited rat paw oedema induced by formaldehyde as compared to respective controls in albino rats (p<0.05-0.001). The aqueous extract of the plant produced significant inhibition of granuloma formation 18.79% (p<0.01%), 29.13% (p<0.001%) and 44.83% (p<0.001%) at concentrations of 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg respectively. The aqueous extract produced 36.34%, (p<0.01), 50% (p<0.001%) and 68.3% (p<0.001%) inhibition of exudate formation at 500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg respectively. The aqueous extract also significantly inhibited rat paw oedema induced by formaldehyde (p<0.05 -0.001). However, the extract was found to be...

Four plant species Senna italica, Prosopis juliflora, Cressa cretica and Schouwia purpurea were selected to estimate phytoconstituents and quantify total phenols, tannins, and flavonoids. The total content of phenols, tannins, and flavonoids with the gallic acid curve by the standard method was estimated. The leaf extract of Senna italica contained maximum, and Schouwia purpurea contained a minimum amount of phenol. The maximum amount of tannins was found in Schouwia purpurea, and the minimum amount of flavonoids was recorded in Senna italica. It is further suggested that there are a need for systematic phytochemical, pharmaceutical and pharmacological investigations of these plants since there are less reports available. Moreover, these plants are accessible in abundant in Ballari region and can prove to be the best source for bioprospection studies since they contain high contents of phenols, tannins, and...
