Areca catechu L. (Arecaceae) is a species of palm mainly grown in Asian countries for seed crop. Areca nut leaves are commonly used in traditional systems of medicine against various ailments. There is a need for identifying native natural plant sources to acquire their recognized medicinal properties, which may widen them to use as new therapeutics for various diseases. Phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Areca catechu L. yielded a alkaloid- Arecoline, from the chloroform extract; a flavonoid- Apigenin, from the methanol extract and a steroid- Stigmasterol, from petroleum ether extract. In-vitro methods were used to evaluate the pharmacological activity of the leaves of Areca catechu L. Anti-inflammatory activity of the leaves of Areca catechu was estimated by using standard methods like protein denaturation method using bovine serum albumin fraction and egg albumin and by HRBC membrane stabilization method. The result suggests that the leaves possess good antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory...

Purpose of the study: To assess Structural and functional abnormalities associated with High fructose diet-induced Metabolic syndrome in wistar albino rats. Materials and Methods: Metabolic syndrome is induced in adult male Wistar albino rats by feeding a combination of High Fructose Diet (55%) and Fructose enriched water (15%) for 75 days and kept as group 2 or HFrD Group. Normal male Wistar albino rats were kept as Normal control. During the entire course of study, weekly weight gain was monitored once a week in both groups. Biochemical investigations such as lipid profile, liver function test, and renal function test was carried out using standard methods. Routine histological studies were done to analyze the microstructural changes. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by students‘t’ tests and the values were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. Results: Chronic administration of a High fructose diet (HFrD) resulted in obesity, abnormal hepatic and renal functions in wistar rats. The gross and microstructural changes were minimal in the pancreas and heart, whereas significant damages were...

Five marine sponges were collected off Carmen, Agusan del Norte, Philippines and taxonomically identified as Axinyssa sp., Plocamionida sp., Forcepia sp., Pachymatisma sp and Placospongia sp. The “non-polar” (EtOAc-MeOH) and “pola”r (EtOH-H2O) extracts of the marine sponges were prepared and subjected to 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, a total antioxidant capacity assay using the phosphor molybdenum method and antimicrobial assay using the paper disc diffusion method. The marine sponge extracts exhibited low antioxidant activity as indicated by both the percent antiradical activity values obtained which ranged from 0.89% to 5.41% and the total antioxidant capacity values expressed as Ascorbic Acid Equivalence (AAE) ranging from 11.99 to 126.67 AAE and Butylated Hydroxytoluene Equivalence (BHTE) with a value range of 6.64 to 148.30 BHTE). The non-polar extracts from all the marine sponges as well as the polar extract from the marine sponge Forcepia sp. showed antibacterial activity against the two bacterial strains, B. subtilis and E. coli. However, the marine sponge extracts no significant antifungal activity against the two fungal...

Senna alata is an effective novel pharmaceutical medicinal plant. The hot extraction method was used to prepare methanol and ethanol extracts of leaves. The extracts were further evaluated to study Antimicrobial potential, phytochemical analysis, FTIR, and Antioxidant activity. The FTIR analysis showed various functional groups that served as secondary metabolites and responsible for antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial activity of the extract may be due to the presence of secondary metabolites like alkaloids, terpenoids, phenols, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides and tannins. The Senna alata leaves were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against clinically important bacterial strains such as E. coli, B. cereus, B. subtilis, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, and fungi strain namely A. niger by agar well diffusion method. The ethanolic extract of the leaves of Senna alata showed the highest antioxidant activity. S. alata has a great antimicrobial ability which needs to be intensively discussed...

Moringa oleifera and chywanprash are two main nutraceuticals used worldwide because of their large medicinal application. The quality of these nutraceutical products is in question, especially due to the inorganic contaminants like heavy metals. In the present study, six Moringa herbal powder and five chywanprash samples were collected in India and further analyzed for As, Cd, Hg, and Pb. All samples were microwave digested and analyzed by ICP-MS. In Moringa As, Cd, Hg and Pb were found in the range of 0.027-5.264 µg/mL, 0.014-0.039 µg/mL, 0.049-45.225 µg/mL and 0.323-12.487 µg/mL respectively. In chywanprash As, Cd, Hg and Pb were found in the range of 0.012-0.021 µg/mL, 0.004-0.029 µg/mL, 0.01-0.103 µg/mL and 0.06-0.171 µg/mL respectively. The concentration of these heavy metals were found to be more than the maximum permissible limit given by the WHO for herbal medicines. Hence strong regulatory guideline needs to be prepared to improve quality of...
