Background: The entire world is battling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that potentially leads to pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, often resulting in death. Therefore, the utmost challenge from a medical perspective is to improve lung function before the patient requires intubation and critical care. In the same light, the use of low dose radiation therapy (LDRT) that has been used to treat various non-malignant inflammatory conditions can be exploited as a promising approach to combat ARDS in COVID-19 patients. LDRT is a century-old popular treatment of viral pneumonia that has been reported to reduce inflammation and prevent the cytokine storm, thus mitigating the severity of pneumonitis. Given the outcomes of pilot clinical studies, the administration of LDRT should be kept as an option in clinical situations where benefits outweigh the risks. Therefore, the present communication highlights the anti-inflammatory role of LDRT so as to revisit its prospective role in COVID-19 pneumonia treatment. Conclusions: In the COVID-19 pandemic, LDRT appears as a cost-efficient, potent, non-invasive, anti-inflammatory treatment...

AIM: To see the appraisement of drug utilization pattern of antimicrobials in the general medicine department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Methodology: A prospective observational, analytical study was done on patients admitted in general medicine of Maharaja Institute of Medical Sciences, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, India information regarding age, gender, diagnosis, patients present/past medical history, treatment, drug interactions were recorded in a standard questionnaire(case report form). The drug utilization process was evaluated using quality indicators of drug use recommendations by WHO. PDD of drugs and maximally used antimicrobials were analyzed. Results: A total of 250 patients were included after excluding missing data. Out of 250 patients, 123 (49.2%) were male, and 127 (50.8%) were female, 183 (65.12%) was bacterial, 74 (26.33%) were viral, 22 (7.82%) were protozoal, 2 (0.7%) were fungal, and the p-value was 0.0213, cephalosporins were most prescribed antimicrobial (27.72%), and anti-helminthics were least (0.33%), and p-value was found to be 0.0016. Out of 18 UTI cases, 3 were male, and 15 were female, and the p-value...

In the vision of chemistry, Schiff bases are excellent ligands and play a very important role in drug discovery and development. The Schiff bases and their complexes have been reported in the literature possessing wide applications in biological, clinical, and analytical fields. In outlook of this, new Schiff bases of Sulfonamide drug were synthesized by a very simple reaction and in good yield. The purity of the newly synthesized bases was confirmed by performing TLC in a suitable solvent system. The functional groups present in the targeted Schiff bases were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Further, all the synthesized compounds were successfully screened for their antimicrobial activity. Among these Schiff bases, the compound containing nitro and fluoro groups shows greater activity than standard drugs. By considering this, there is a need to design more analogs of sulfonamide Schiff bases and correlate the structural modifications with their respective antimicrobial activity to develop a Structure activity...

The current pandemic COVID 19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is very contagious and causes respiratory disease. Genomic analysis of different strains in SARS-CoV-2 were found to infect different geographical locations of the world (India, USA, and Brazil) and also in different parts of India (Kerala, Surat, and Ahmedabad). These sequences were downloaded from the viral genome sequence database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and comparative analysis is performed using various computational tools. Comparison of genome size, G+C content, and identified ORFs is performed for different sequences of SARS-CoV-2 isolated from different geographical locations of the world and also from different cities/states of India using various bioinformatics tools. This study concludes that all the sequences isolated from different geographical locations are highly similar to the reference strain of Wuhan, with an identity percentage ranging from 99.56-99.98% and also with the same GC content of 37%. The difference in the identified ORFs of length >150 and a small difference in the identity percentages shows the presence of mutation between...

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder in the endocrine system resulting from a defect in insulin secretion, insulin action or both of them. Adverse side effects of chemical drugs for the treatment of diabetes persuaded the use of medical plants. Macrotyloma uniflorum is a traditionally used plant for the treatment of diabetes is packed with powerful plant constituents with polyphenols, flavonoids, and proteins. They are one of the richest antioxidant sources, which lower blood sugar and bear other beneficial health effects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ethanolic extract of Macrotyloma uniflorum leaves and stem (EMULS) on Alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In this study 36 Male Sprague Dawley rats, the body weight of 150-200 g was divided into 5 groups. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg/kg Alloxan. The Macrotyloma uniflorum treatment duration was 30 days in which two doses of extract (200 mg/kg & 400 mg/kg) were orally administered to diabetic rats. Blood glucose levels were estimated with glucometer before treatment,...
