Objective: The aim of this pilot study was to assess the effect of processed Nigella Sativa (N. Sativa) on oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea in patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: Ten women diagnosed with PCOS, having oligo-amenorrhea, participated in this study. The National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s criteria were used for the diagnosis. The patients, between 18 to 38 years old, were treated with 2 g/day of encapsulated processed N. Sativa for 16 weeks. This study compared menstruation habits before and after the medication. A series of metabolic and hormonal investigations was done at the beginning and the end of the study. Participants did not take any other medications. Monthly visits were done to assess the treatment. The effects of N. Sativa on the menstrual cycle was evaluated by four criteria: menstruation occurrence, menstruations intervals, menstruation severity and menstruation duration. The blood test results were analyzed using Stata version 13. Results: The average duration of menstruation and the ratio of cycle per month significantly increased during a...

The treatment of cancer up to the saving of life of cancer patient is rare miracle. Cancer is deadly disorder (some cancers are diseases caused by viruses) if diagnosed in second or third stage leads to death, hence it is better to prevent it. The present study emphasizes on prevention of cancer rather than cure. Extraction of garlic was carried out by using maceration process. The liquid extract was concentrated under vacuum at 25 °C. Concentrated extract was exposed to UV light and packed in a suitable container for use in formulation development. Orodisperssible film formulation was developed by solvent casting method. In-vitro activity was evaluated on different cancer cell lines like human colon cancer cell line (COLO 205) and human prostate cancer cell line (PC-3). As compared to standard drug, Adriamycin (Doxorubicin) of allopathic origin, orodisperssible film formulation containing hydro-alcoholic garlic extract shows comparable tumor suppressive activity. Hence, orodisperssible film formulation containing stabilized garlic extract will find its place in nutraceutical market. To warrant further tumor suppressive activity...

Bromelain is a protease present in pineapple fruit and stem. It is reported that commercially available pure bromelain has anticancer, anti-inflammatory and other therapeutic effects. But there are few reports available on the biological activity of bromelain along with peroxidase which is present in pineapple fruit extract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of bromelain with peroxidase from pineapple fruit against lymphoma cell line in in-vitro. Pineapple was purchased from the local market from Tripura. Bromelain isolated along with peroxidase and enzyme activity tested with the substrate. In-vitro cytotoxicity was determined by MTT assay, and apoptosis was determined by fluorescence microscopy, DNA fragmentation assay and by western blot analysis. Fluorescence microscopy analysis and the MTT assay showed significant apoptosis of lymphoma cell after treated with bromelain along with peroxidase in a dose- and time-dependent manner and was more apoptotic than bromelain alone. This was further confirmed by DNA fragmentation assay. Furthermore, western blotting analysis confirmed the mitochondrial pathway is involved in apoptosis of lymphoma...

Context: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) early diagnosis of disease can reduce the morbidity and mortality by prevention of maternal and fetal complications. Aims: To assess the impact of clinical pharmacist knowledge on GDM mothers. Setting Tertiary care teaching hospital of North Karnataka, India. Methods and Materials: A randomized controlled cross-sectional study was carried out for a period of 4 years. Pregnant women with GDM were divided into control (C) and interventional (I) groups. Group C patients received only physicians’ counselling whereas, group I patients received both clinical pharmacist counselling and physicians’ counselling. Both the groups were screened for blood glucose levels at baseline and follow-up. Results: A total of 500 (group C, n=250 and group I, n=250) mothers diagnosed to have GDM participated in the study and randomized into two groups. Initially the knowledge of GDM among pregnant women was poor. After the clinical pharmacist counselling, knowledge was enhanced, which prompts better education and use of new methods such as phemplets, audio visual methods and flipcharts. Conclusions: The results...

Dillenia indica (DI) is a traditionally used medicinal plant which is reported to exhibit wide range of pharmacological activities. However, no vast scientific study has been conducted in this regard. The present study was designed to investigate the antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidative activities of the Dillenia indica fruits. Aqueous and methanolic extracts of the fruits were prepared and Phenolic and flavonoid content of the extracts were determined. Diabetic mice were prepared with alloxan (150 mg/kg) body weight (b.w.). Antihyperglycemic study was carried out with doses (150-550) mg/kg b.w. of methanolic fruit extract (MFE) in diabetic mice. Biochemical analysis of lipid profile and liver marker enzymes were carried out. Antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase) activity assessments and histopathological investigations were done in liver and kidneys of mice. From the studies we found that MFE possesses higher phenolic and flavonoid content and therefore were considered for further studies. From the antihyperglycemic study it was found that 350 mg/kg b.w. dose was the most effective in reduction of blood...
