Terminalia catappa Linn. belongs to the family Combretraceae found in tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Australia, which is commonly called as Indian almond, sea-almond, tropical almond, wild badam. The fruit is useful in bronchitis and bowels. Juice of leaves is used in the preparation of the ointment for scabies, leprosy, cutaneous diseases and also as analgesic. The root bark is used in dysentery and diarrhoea. The stem bark cures fevers. The oil yielded from kernels is used commercially as a substituted for almond oil. According to the literature the different parts of the plants is used in many therapies including, antibacterial anticlastogenic, antioxidant, antifungal, antiulcer and molluscidal activity, management of sickle cell aneamia, anticancer, anti HIV reverse transcriptase, hepato- protective, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic. In this study the methanol extracts of two varieties of Terminalia catappa (yellow and red variety) leaf was screened for antifungal like Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger and antibacterial like Eschiershea coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter species, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aerogenosa and Bacillus cereus was evaluated. The...

The work was under taken as an attempt to prepare quick release films of ebastine with the purpose of developing a dosage form for very quickly on set of action, which will be beneficial in managing severe condition of allergies, aiding in enhancement of bioavailability. It is necessary to prepare ebastine as fast dissolving oral films to bypass the first pass metabolism. Ebastine was prepared as solid dispersion. Ebastine solid dispersion was incorporated in a different concentration of polymers such as pullulan, HPMC and PVP for the development of fast dissolving films. Propylene glycol was used as a plasticizer and aspartame as a sweetener. Films were prepared by a solvent casting method. The developed films were subjected for the physicochemical characterization such as uniformity of thickness, uniformity of weight, tensile strength and % elongation, folding endurance, surface pH, drug content uniformity, disintegration time, in-vitro drug release and ex-vivo permeation study. The formulations showed disintegration time within 25 sec. FB5 was found to be the best formulation, and has shown...

In the current study, synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using swertipunicoside was tested against human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). The swertipunicoside was tested against the normal cell line such as vero cells to find out the toxicity of the compound. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, x – ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field-emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESESM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAX). The synthesized silver nanoparticles was checked with the colour variation and it was confirmed by UV-vis spectral analysis. The morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles were analysed using FESEM along with EDAX. The XRD was done to find out the crystalline structure of the compound. FTIR measurements are carried out to identify the possible biomolecules responsible for capping and efficient stabilization of the silver NPs synthesized using swertipunicoside. The synthesized AgNPs and swertipunicoside was tested against the MCF-7 cell line to find out the cell viability. Our results showed that the compound and synthesized silver nanoparticles inhibited the proliferation of...

Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) are the most common adverse effect of antipsychotic drugs. Haloperidol is atypical antipsychotic agents which has high potency, effectively used against delusion, hallucinations and have increased propensity to cause drug induced EPS. The adverse effects of haloperidol include muscle stiffness, parkinsonism, uncontrolled or slowed movements of any part of the body. Here we report a case of 33 years old male patient developed EPS after intramuscular administration of haloperidol for delusion disorder. After 3 weeks patient developed muscle stiffness and reduced movements. The patient was treated with Inj. promethazine (phenergan) 25 mg which showed gradual improvement in clinical condition after a week. Hence, physicians should evaluate the patient condition regularly to prevent the progression of adverse events, which improves the patient condition physically and economically. Primary management includes proper diagnosis, discontinuation of offending drugs, reduction of risk factors and supportive medical management. Second generation antipsychotics have the lowest propensity to cause extrapyramidal symptoms can be used based on the patient...

Introduction and Aims: Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has improved morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV across countries including countries in sub-Sahara Africa. However, cART is associated with renal impairment. The lack of pre-cART data in a recently published study limited the discussion on renal-based treatment outcomes with cART, which could have important clinical implications. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to correct this. Methods: Longitudinal retrospective study, with renal function assessed pre-cART and at various time points on cART using the Cockcroft-Gault method. The data source was the patients’ care booklets. Results: 71 patients were included. The majority were adults and female. Before cART initiation, 70.4% and 29.6% had abnormal and normal CrCl, respectively. CrCl was normalised in 24% of patients, while abnormal in the remainder. The mean (median) time to normalisation was 47.4 (33.7) months, observed more in paediatric than adult patients (p = 0.014). However, in paediatric patients, normalisation took longer than in adult patients. The reduction in CrCl, was observed at variable time points....
