Context: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) early diagnosis of disease can reduce the morbidity and mortality by prevention of maternal and fetal complications. Aims: To assess the impact of clinical pharmacist knowledge on GDM mothers. Setting Tertiary care teaching hospital of North Karnataka, India. Methods and Materials: A randomized controlled cross-sectional study was carried out for a period of 4 years. Pregnant women with GDM were divided into control (C) and interventional (I) groups. Group C patients received only physicians’ counselling whereas, group I patients received both clinical pharmacist counselling and physicians’ counselling. Both the groups were screened for blood glucose levels at baseline and follow-up. Results: A total of 500 (group C, n=250 and group I, n=250) mothers diagnosed to have GDM participated in the study and randomized into two groups. Initially the knowledge of GDM among pregnant women was poor. After the clinical pharmacist counselling, knowledge was enhanced, which prompts better education and use of new methods such as phemplets, audio visual methods and flipcharts. Conclusions: The results...

Dillenia indica (DI) is a traditionally used medicinal plant which is reported to exhibit wide range of pharmacological activities. However, no vast scientific study has been conducted in this regard. The present study was designed to investigate the antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidative activities of the Dillenia indica fruits. Aqueous and methanolic extracts of the fruits were prepared and Phenolic and flavonoid content of the extracts were determined. Diabetic mice were prepared with alloxan (150 mg/kg) body weight (b.w.). Antihyperglycemic study was carried out with doses (150-550) mg/kg b.w. of methanolic fruit extract (MFE) in diabetic mice. Biochemical analysis of lipid profile and liver marker enzymes were carried out. Antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase) activity assessments and histopathological investigations were done in liver and kidneys of mice. From the studies we found that MFE possesses higher phenolic and flavonoid content and therefore were considered for further studies. From the antihyperglycemic study it was found that 350 mg/kg b.w. dose was the most effective in reduction of blood...

Currently, coronary artery disease is reported as the major cause of mortality and morbidity and is expected to be the reason for 40% death in 2020. Since its rate is high in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, a study has been designed to analyze the correlation of insulin resistance and obesity with incidence and severity of disease. Study was done on 109 individuals with established CAD in the age group of 40 – 70 years who had undergone coronary angiography and diagnosed with coronary artery disease including single vessel, double vessel and triple vessel and seventy one healthy individuals matched for age, and sex. The estimation of fasting FBG), post prandial blood glucose (PPBG, fasting insulin and insulin resistance by gold standard methods. In our study BMI and insulin resistance was found to be significantly high in CAD with diabetes mellitus subjects compared to CAD without DM and control (with p<0.001). Also in our study significantly high percentage of incidence of CAD and significantly high level of severity in...

Neurodegeneration is a powerful initiator for a number of nervous system related diseases that come under the term “neurodegenerative diseases”. Neurodegenerative diseases are incurable, results in the progressive degeneration of nerve cells and causes problems with movement and mental functioning that became a challenge in present day’s health care. For this study we made a model of Huntington’s chorea, one of the neurodegenerative disorders by inducing experimental neurodegeneration and tried to prevent the neurodegeneration by giving ethanolic extract of Withania somnifera and its active principle withanolide A 10 days before the lesion surgery. The herb Withania somnifera is a well known herb in India and was used by all the Ayurvedic legends for nervous system related problems. We used 5 animal groups for this study they are CO, SC, LC, WS125 and WA100. All the animals were trained to walk in a narrow beam prior to surgery and were analyzed for motor co-ordination on the 5th day post lesion to find out the protective nature of the drugs employed....

Plants are an important source of substances which are claimed to induce biological activities. Although there are a few studies on antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of this plant, antimutagenic activity has not been studied and there is no study in Turkey. Antibacterial activities of Syzygium aromaticum against oral pathogens have not been reported until today. The scope of this work was to investigate the biological activities of S. aromaticum different extracts. The various extracts were screened for antibacterial activity. The bacteria were isolated from oral flora by traditional methods. The plant extracts were tested by Kirby-Bauer method. Other antibacterial activities tests are MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration). In addition to, the antioxidant activities of plant extracts were screened by the stable DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate) free-radical. The antimutagenicity of the plant extracts were determined by Ames test using Salmonella typimurium strains. The highest antibacterial activity was determined as 20 mm inhibition zone from methanol extracts. The highest DPPH scavenging activity was found as 82%...
