Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. is a versatile herb as beyond its nutritional properties it also have various health benefits like anti-diabetic, anti-inflammation, anticancer, antibacterial, anti hypertensive etc. Most of these activities can be attributed to the presence of certain bioactive components categorised as polyphenols, present in its various parts. Present work describes a method for simultaneous detection and quantification of polyphenols present in the seed extract using HPLC and analyzing in-vitro anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory potential of the extract. HPLC method was developed using Ultra HPLC with attached PDA detector, at a wavelength of 275 nm. The mobile phase used was acetonitrile: formic acid at gradient flow. Five polyphenols rutin, quercetin, apigenin, gallic acid, and catechin have been detected and quantified. The IC50 value (mg/mL; the concentration that causes a decrease in initial concentration by 50%) of ethyl acetate extract determined for α-Amylase, α-Glucosidase, and lipoxygenase enzymes was 471 mg/ml, 551 mg/ml and 524 mg/ml...

Hexane extract of Galangal (Alpinia galanga) rhizome was evaluated for acute dermal, oral and intraperitoneal toxicities using OECD guidelines. The undiluted crude galangal extract showed negligible irritation on non-abraded skin of New Zealand white rabbits with 0.25 primary irritation index whereas the abraded skin of the rabbits showed irritation for all tested dilutions of galangal extracts; 0.75 g/ml, 0.5 g/ml, 0.25 g/ml and 0.125 g/ml. The single oral dose of the Galangal extract at 2000 mg/kg did not produce mortality or significant changes in the general behavior, body weights, feed intake and biochemical analysis (ALT, AST, BUN and creatinine levels) of Wistar rats compared to the control. However, 2000 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg body weight of galangal extract were highly toxic to Wistar rats when administered intraperitoneally. Galangal extract with concen-trations <20 mg/ml were non-irritant on Hen’s egg chorioallantoic membrane which is an alternative to the Draize eye irritation test....

Cinnamon commonly known as ‘Kurundu’ in Sri Lanka has been used as a spice since antiquity. It is obtained from the inner bark of several species of the genus Cinnamomum that belongs to the family Lauraceae. Among the cinnamon species, Cinnamomum verum (syn. Cinnamomum zeylanicum Nees) is native to Sri Lanka and is also known as “Ceylon” cinnamon or “true” cinnamon. Cinnamon produced in Sri Lanka has acquired a long-standing reputation in the international market. Today, there are many value-added products of cinnamon in the local and international market. Through a market survey four value-added cinnamon products in the Sri Lankan market containing 100% cinnamon inner bark were identified and have been subjected to chemical and biological studies along with the inner bark of true cinnamon. Phytochemical screening of 80% aqueous methanol extracts of cinnamon samples was carried out according to previously published methods. All the extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, tannins, triterpenoids and saponins and the absence of steroids and cyanogenic glycosides. The total phenolic...

Depression is the major cause of disability Worldwide. Antidepressant medications remain a mainstay of treatment for major depressive disorder. Our aim in this study was to analyze the LFT & RFT in patients of major depressive disorder taking imipramine, sertraline and escitalopram. A total of 810 such patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups i.e. group I, II & III containing 270 patients in each group and treated with imipramine, sertraline and escitalopram as per scheduled dose respectively. LFT & RFT parameters during enrolment visit as well as follow up at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks were recorded and analysed as per appropriate statistical method. After 12 weeks of treatment mean value of SGOT, SGPT, serum bilirubin, serum alkaline phosphate, serum albumin and total protein level were increased in all study groups but these were within normal range. In RFT; mean value of blood urea, uric acid and serum creatinine increased whereas serum sodium level and serum potassium level was reduced...

Introduction: Ramadan is a lunar month in the Islamic calendar. During this month, individuals who desire to keep a strict fast from dawn to sunset prevent stop eating and drinking. We evaluated the dietary intakes of patients with fatty liver during this month. Material and Methods: Sixty eligible overweight and obese women with fatty liver diagnosed via ultrasonography who had referred to the maternal and child obesity research center were included in this prospective study. Demographic, nutritional, clinical and laboratory data for each patient were extracted and analyzed. Dietary intake was evaluated by a 24 h dietary recall questionnaire and specific validated food frequency questionnaire. Results: The mean age in this population group was 41.4 ± 7.79 years, mean participant weight was 78.90 ± 12.33 kg, and mean BMI was 32.08 ± 4.62. Mean daily energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake, and mean daily intake from different food groups were evaluated and extracted as mean ± SD. Mean daily energy intakes during Ramadan and mean requirement were 2527.41 ±...
