Cancer has emerged as a major health problem globally as a consequence to the increased longevity of the population, changing environment and life style. Chemoprevention is a new and promising strategy for reducing cancer burden. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Quinine sulphate to prevent chemically induced skin cancer in mice. Cancer was induced on 2-stage skin carcinogenesis model by single topical application of 7,12 dimethylbenz [a] anthracene (DMBA), as initiator, and two weeks later it was promoted by croton oil treatment thrice a week on the dorsal surface of mice for 16 weeks. Mice were divided into following groups: I Normal mice without any treatment, II Topical Acetone treated, III DMBA + Croton oil (Positive Control), Group IV Topical quinine sulfate treated (higher dose), Group V Topical quinine sulfate treated (lower dose). The differences in the values of the results of experimental groups were statistically analyzed which were significant in comparison to the control group. The animals of the quinine sulphate treated group had...

There are so many promising plant based chemical constituents are present which act as alternative therapy for the control of diabetes. But due to lack of its proper quality control parameters they are not widely used. The US FDA patent is approved for fixed dosage combination of Mangiferin (MF) and Berberin HCl (BER) as antidiabetic herbal formulation. Absorbance ratio method uses the ratio of absorbances at two selected wavelengths, one which is an iso-absorptive point and other being the λmax of one of the two components. From the overlay spectra of two phytomarkers, it is evident that MF and BER show an iso-absorptive point at 317 nm. The second wavelength used is 257 nm, which is the λmax of MF. The drug response with respect to absorbance was linear over the concentration range 5 – 30 μg/ml for MF and 10 – 60 μg/ml for BER. The percentage recovery of MF and BER as found to be 100.00% and 100.07% respectively. The method can be successfully employed for the...

India is a land of medicinal flora, there are large numbers of plants with miraculous medicinal values has been used traditionally to cure several diseases from decades in Ayurveda. So the present study was designated to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of Aegle marmelos (bale) bark extracts. In this study different bark extracts were prepared using various solvents, further these extracts were analyzed against selected microbial strains like Escherichia coli (MTCC-443), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC-441), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673), Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC-3160), Aspergillus brasiliensis (MTCC-1344) and Candida albicans (MTCC-227) by agar well diffusion method and determination MIC by broth dilution method. The extracts showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities by inhibiting the growth of respective microorganism in agar well diffusion assay. Extracts of acetone and ethanol 70% showed highest activity against Escherichia coli whereas methanol and choloroform extracts showed significant activity against Bacillus subtilis. The present study supports the immense medicinal properties of Aegle marmelos bark. The study may be insight for future researches in area of new drug development of...

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder leading to dementia in the elderly inhabitants. Increasing evidence advises that oxidative stress that is normally associated with aging is an obvious and early feature of AD and plays a role in its pathogenesis. The present study was designed to evaluate the possible neuroprotective activity of Ginkgo biloba (Gb) and / or Peganum harmala (Ph) extract against AD in a rat model. AD was induced by chronic administration intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine (0.7 mg kg-1, i.p.) to rats for a period of 7 days. The Gb (120 mg/kg b.wt.) and Ph (187.5 mg/kg b.wt.) were administrated to AD rat group orally daily for a period of 30 days. The results revealed that the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and Xanthine oxidase were significantly increased, even though the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as the reduced glutathione, were significantly decreased in the brain homogenate of Alzheimer group. Additionally, brain acetylcholinesterase as well as alkaline phosphatase, acid...

Propionibacterium acnes is one of the bacteria that causes acne. One of the natural ingredients that potentially as anti acne is kefir. Kefir is a product of fermented milk with starter kefir grain. The fermented kefir is incorporated into the gel product for acne treatment. The purpose of this study was to formulate the fermented kefir in the gel product and to test the antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Fermentation in cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and soy milk using starter of kefir grain with concentrations of 2%, 5%, and 7% in each type of milk. One best base formula is added to fermented kefir. Evaluation of the preparation includes organoleptic, homogeneity, dispersion, pH, viscosity at room temperature, accelerated stability test, antibacterial activity test, and panelist test. The best gel base is FT3 with Viscolam® MAC 10 concentration of 8%. The concentration of fermented kefir from cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and soy milk is incorporated into gel products, i.e. 5%, 7%, and 2%, respectively. Stable gel based on organoleptic observation...
