The aim of this experiment was to find out the in-vitro effects of the extracts of certain plants, considered to have medicinal value, on the erythrocyte model. The plants, selected for the study, were Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Amla (Phyllanthus emblica).Three different concentrations of leaf extracts were prepared using tris-HCl, namely 0.3 mg/ml, 0.15 mg/ml and 0.075 mg/ml and their effects on the RBCs in blood samples were studied using optical microscope. Various morphological changes like haemagglutination, shrinking, swelling, distortions, granulation of the membrane and bursting of the cells were observed. The degree of occurrence of a certain morphological change on a particular blood type varied with a variation in its concentration. Also, the same concentration of the extract showed different morphological changes with different blood groups indicating that the blood type is also important in the effects shown by the cell membranes. The crude leaf extracts of medicinal plants significantly affected the integrity and thus, the morphology of the...

The study was intended to evaluate the effectiveness of patient counselling in improving the quality of life (QOL) and knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of hypertensive and diabetic patients in a private educational institution. The study was conducted for a period of six months with the help of validated KAP and QOL questionnaire. Impact of patient counselling was studied by comparing the KAP and QOL score obtained after each subsequent patient counselling sessions. Data analysis was done by SPSS 16.1. Among 83 patients enrolled in the study, 40 were males and 43 were females. Out of 83 patients, 32 (38.55%) were diagnosed as hypertensives and 51 (61.44%) were diabetics. It was found that most of the hypertensives and diabetics were in the age group of 51-60 years. It was further found that the scores of knowledge (2.72 ± 1.80 to 4.88 ± 0.97), attitude (3.41 ± 1.73 to 4.94 ± 0.98) and practice (3.56 ± 1.86 to 6.28 ± 1.78) of hypertensive patients increased from baseline to second follow-up...

The search for natural anti-microbials present in plants has been the target of intense scientific studies over the last years. The objective of this study was to assess the in-vitro antibacterial potential and in silico toxicology of the essential oil of Cinnamomum cassia (Chinese cinnamon) against E. coli and S. aureus strains. The essential oil was initially solubilized in tween 80 and dimethyl sulphoxide acid (DMSO). The antibacterial action was assessed by means of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determined from the microdilution in double-concentrated brain heart infusion broth (BHI) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) which was determined by the depletion in nutrient agar (NA) technique with aliquots of 10µL of the MIC, MIC × 2 and MIC × 4. The MIC and the MBC presented satisfactory and varied results; the E. coli LPM 4459, LPM 1243, LPM 4010 and LPM 4896 strains, had a MIC of 256 µg/mL and MBC of 512 µg/mL respectively. As for the E. coli LPM 2810 and S. aureus LPM 55 strains,...

Chronic stress is a risk factor for the development of many psychopathological conditions in humans, including major depression and anxiety disorders and cognitive dysfunction. It is therefore important to focus on identifying possible mechanism to prevent these stress-induced disorders. Therefore, current study was designed to investigate the effect of Eclipta alba on chronic unpredicted stress (CUS) induced behavioral dysfunction, oxidative stress and neurotransmitter levels in the discrete regions of rat brain. Animals were subjected to acute and chronic unpredictable stress for 30 days, and the effect of Eclipta alba was studied in acute and chronic stressed animals during which 200 mg/kg Eclipta alba was administered orally. Our Results revealed that stressed animals performed poorly in Novel object recognition task (NORT). Eclipta alba alleviated behavioral dysfunction in chronically stressed animals and also significantly increased antioxidant levels such as SOD, Catalase, total thiol and decreased oxidative stress markers such MDA, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide in discrete brain regions as compared to CUS. Further increased catecholamine and decreased 5HT due to...

Acalypha inferno (AI) is a well-known ornamental plant, presently with no known documentation concerning its therapeutic use and safety profile. However, other plants of the same genus, Acalypha, have been reported to have various uses ranging from food to medicine with their related adverse effects. This study therefore focused on the acute and subchronic toxicity effects of aqueous ethanolic leaf extract of Acalypha inferno leaves (AIE) in animals. The acute toxicity study was performed using the fixed dose method. In the subchronic assessment, both male and female rats were separately administered with AIE at doses of 100 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg twice daily for 28 days. Change in body weight, relative organ weight, haematological parameters and biochemical parameters were recorded and analysed. In the acute toxicity study, no deleterious effect was observed up to 5000 mg/kg, hence the LD50≥5000 mg/kg. In the subchronic toxicity study, significant increase in weight was observed at all doses in male rats whilst a significant decrease was observed only at 500 mg/kg in...
