Agapanthus praecox Willd of the family Amaryllidaceae is widely used in South African traditional medicine to treat heart disease, paralysis, coughs, colds, chest pains and diarrhoea. The decoction is used to prevent pregnancy complications and argument labour. The study aims at determining the phytochemical constituents and investigating the potential toxicity of the solvent extracts of A. praecox. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was done using standard procedures and spectro-photometric techniques while the toxicity assessment was carried out with brine shrimp toxicity bioassay. The data were subjected to two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey’s test. Methanol had the highest percentage yield of extract (16.2 %) while water (9.3 %) was the least. The quantities of tannins (335.23 mg g-1), phenols (91.11 mg g-1), proanthocyanidins (139.47 mg g-1), flavonoids (46.53 mg g-1) and flavanols (74.02 mg g-1) in acetone extract were significantly higher (p > 0.05) than in aqueous and methanolic extracts. Highest hatching success was recorded in aqueous extract (50.33%) and the lowest hatching success (p < 0.05) was...

Zirconium tetrachloride was produced in a pilot plant fluidized bed reactor via the carbochlorination reaction of zirconia. Minitab software 17 was used for the design of experiment with response surface methodology (RSM) for both semi batch and continuous processes. The operating temperature (800-1200 °C), reaction time (30-90 min) and mean particle size (MPS) (70-130µm) were chosen as the range of operating conditions at semi-batch mode. Also, the ranges of operating variables at the continuous mode were chosen to be the operating temperature(1000-1400°C), chlorine concentration (3-5mol/m3) and mean particle size (MPS) (70-130µm). The coefficients of determination (R2) for semi-batch and continuous modes by RSM analysis were 99.54% and 99.94%, respectively. The optimal operating conditions was predicted to be the Cl2 concentration of 3mol/m3, temperature of 1380 °C and the mean particle size of 70µm in which the maximum chlorine conversion of 98.26% was obtained at continuous process. The optimum operating conditions for semi-batch process were found by using RSM modelling to be 1200°C, 90 min and 70 µm, in which...

Pregnancy and childbirth have been an essential part of human existence for millennia, but unfortunately the experience has not been easy for all women. Although many pharmaceutical drugs are available but the potential of drugs to cause harm, exemplified by thalidomide in 1958 cannot be ignored. Therefore, many pharmaceutical drugs are not recommended for use during pregnancy either because of known or suspected problems or because not enough is known to say that they are safe. In this respect, herbal medicine is gaining popularity both in developing and developed countries because of their natural origin and relative safety with fewer side effects. This article briefly reviews some of those plants all over the world which are being used during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. About 122 plants species belonging to different families were reviewed among which the most common were Asparagus racemosus (Liliaceae), Apium graveolens (Apiaceae), Rheum officinale (Polygonaaceae), Veratrum nigrum (Melanthiaceae). From the present studies it can be conclude that, herbal medicines can be used during pregnancy, childbirth...

Siddha system of medicine is the ancient traditional medicine practiced all over Tamil Nadu. Siddha system is bestowed with various specialities of few which are Varmam, Pranayamam, Yoga and Kayakarpam. This system has a vast repository of internal and external medicines; Varmam is one among such therapies used to treat multiple ailments, especially related to musculoskeletal and neurological deficits. Varmam is the vital life energy points located in human body and was identified as 108 points by the Siddhars. Here the Varmam treatment for Azhalkeelvaayu (Osteoarthritis), one of the types of Keelvaayu mentioned in the Siddha Noi naadal book is evaluated in a small group of patients. Among the elderly knee Osteoarthritis is leading cause of chronic disability in developed countries. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the second most common rheumatologic problem and is most frequent joint disease with prevalence of 22% to 39% in India. A study was done on 30 clinically diagnosed patients of osteoarthritis (knee joint). Such patients who underwent Varmam therapy are observed and results are presented....

Community pharmacists are well placed to contribute to reduction of premature deaths from cardiovascular disease by implementing risk assessment and reduction strategies. The objective of this study was to assess outcomes of pharmacist’s cardiovascular risk reduction intervention among high risk persons dwelling in a rural community. Cardiovascular risk reduction intervention was carried out among 45 high risk patients using a non-randomized before and after design. Blood pressure, total cholesterol, random blood sugar and BMI were measured. Intervention consisted of leaflet based patient education, referral to physician and provision of prescribed medications at no charge. Data were expressed as mean, standard deviation and 95% confidence interval. Differences between baseline and post intervention values were explored using paired t test. The primary outcome measure was change in cardiovascular risk category between baseline and end of study. The results show that there were significant differences in blood pressures at baseline vs. post-intervention, (184.74 ± 15.78 vs. 138.69 ± 13.57; P ˂ 0.001), and (102.17 ± 15.14 vs. 82.62 ± 9.45, P ˂...
