Cinnamomum riparium Gamble belongs to the family Lauraceae is a red listed species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is a tree growing in evergreen forests and traditionally used for treating conditions like wound healing, fever, intestinal worms, headache, inflammations, menstrual problems etc. According to tribal’s, this activity is mainly due to the volatile oil present in it. But as per published reports much works have not been carried out so far using its volatile oil. Hence it was thought worth to do the research work on this plant. Berries were collected from Paniyeli poru, near Periyar river, Ernakulam District, latitude 10.1720° N and longitude76.5959° E Kerala, India. Berry essential oil was separated by steam distillation technique by using a Clevenger trap apparatus. Agapanthus praecox Willd of the family Amaryllidaceae is widely used in South African traditional medicine to treat heart disease, paralysis, coughs, colds, chest pains and diarrhoea. The decoction is used to prevent pregnancy complications and argument labour. The study aims at determining the phytochemical constituents and investigating the potential toxicity of the solvent extracts of A. praecox. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was done using standard procedures and spectro-photometric techniques while the toxicity assessment was carried out with brine shrimp toxicity bioassay. The data were subjected to two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey’s test. Methanol had the highest percentage yield of extract (16.2 %) while water (9.3 %) was the least. The quantities of tannins (335.23 mg g-1), phenols (91.11 mg g-1), proanthocyanidins (139.47 mg g-1), flavonoids (46.53 mg g-1) and flavanols (74.02 mg g-1) in acetone extract were significantly higher (p > 0.05) than in aqueous and methanolic extracts. Zirconium tetrachloride was produced in a pilot plant fluidized bed reactor via the carbochlorination reaction of zirconia. Minitab software 17 was used for the design of experiment with response surface methodology (RSM) for both semi batch and continuous processes. The operating temperature (800-1200 °C), reaction time (30-90 min) and mean particle size (MPS) (70-130µm) were chosen as the range of operating conditions at semi-batch mode. Also, the ranges of operating variables at the continuous mode were chosen to be the operating temperature(1000-1400°C), chlorine concentration (3-5mol/m3) and mean particle size (MPS) (70-130µm). The coefficients of determination (R2) for semi-batch and continuous modes by RSM analysis were 99.54% and 99.94%, respectively. The optimal operating conditions was predicted to be the Cl2 concentration of 3mol/m3, temperature of 1380 °C and the mean particle size of 70µm in which the maximum chlorine conversion of 98.26% was obtained at continuous process. Pregnancy and childbirth have been an essential part of human existence for millennia, but unfortunately the experience has not been easy for all women. Although many pharmaceutical drugs are available but the potential of drugs to cause harm, exemplified by thalidomide in 1958 cannot be ignored. Therefore, many pharmaceutical drugs are not recommended for use during pregnancy either because of known or suspected problems or because not enough is known to say that they are safe. In this respect, herbal medicine is gaining popularity both in developing and developed countries because of their natural origin and relative safety with fewer side effects.
