The aim of the present article was to examine the protective effect of ferulic acid against liver cholestasis in female rats treated with ethinylestradiol (EE). The daily oral administration of the ferulic acid at a concentration of 40 mg/kg body weight for 15 days to rats treated with EE (100 µg/kg body weight for 5 days) resulted in a significant protection against EE-induced decrease in plasma cholesterol, bile acid, hepatic reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), and catalase (CAT) levels as well as against an increase of plasma bilirubin, alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), malondialdehyde (MDA), 5′- Nucleotidase, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). The present work concern the production of activated carbon of reasonably good properties from cheep sources. The results of preparation of activated carbon from compressed wood sheets residues used in the furniture industry are presented. The preparation method entails the conversion of the wood sheets to a small size pellets and reacting these pellets with the activating agent FeCl3 (3% w/w). The mixture was heated at 300 oC for a period of 3 hours. The product was allowed to cool to room temperature, followed by carbonization at high temperatures with KOH. The effects of carbonization time periods of 3 and 12 hours and the ratios of wood pellets to potassium hydroxide (1:0.5, 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2) were investigated in order to determine the best operating conditions. The quality of the activated carbon produced was assessed by different methods such as density, humidity, ash content, iodine adsorption and the ability for methylene blue pigment removal from aqueous solution. The aim of the present investigation was to prepare and evaluate novel bioadhesive vaginal microspheres containing Terbinafine (TBH) in order to provide long-term therapeutic activity at the site of infection and prove the same using in vitro anti fungal activity of the same using Candida albicans. Microspheres were prepared by the Solvent extraction technique using sodium hyaluronate and Arlacel A. Microspheres were characterized by SEM, DSC, FTIR, particle size analysis and evaluated for percentage yield, drug loading, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release. FTIR and DSC studies showed that no chemical changes or alterations occurred in the drug and polymers. The sphericity factor indicated that the prepared microspheres were spherical. Formulation (TBHMs) indicated a controlled in vitro drug release and good bioadhesive strength. Arsenic is a well known pulmonary irritant and has been found associated with lung cancer in smelter workers exposed to arsenic via inhalation. The recent findings suggest the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated during arsenic metabolism in inducing arsenic toxicity. Thus present work was designed to establish a correlation between arsenic induced oxidative stress, histopathological alterations and genotoxicity in pulmonary tissue of balb/c mice and assessing the therapeutic efficacy of Ocimum sanctum (200mg/kg b.wt., orally) against arsenic (1.57 mg/kg b.wt., 1/10th of LD50) intoxicated mice. Sub-chronic arsenic exposure elicited significant elevation in lipid peroxidation, reduction in glutathione and antioxidant enzyme levels in lungs of mice. Histopathological observations revealed degeneration of bronchiolar epithelium, enhanced number of alveolar macrophage, reduction in alveolar space and alveolar hyperplasia, where as fragmented genomic DNA from the pulmonary tissue indicated oxidative stress mediated genotoxicity. A series of six new, mixed transition metal and alkaline earth metal complexes of the general formulation [MM/(C4H4O6)2.xH2O] (where M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, M/ = Ca ) are synthesized by using bidentate tartarate ligand and are characterized by different analytical techniques such as elemental analysis, TGA, FTIR, XRD, SEM, magnetic susceptibility study, UV-visible spectroscopy etc. All synthesized mixed metal complexes (sample A1 to A6) were then tested for in vitro anti-biofilm activity against some fresh bacterial cultures namely of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC-27853, E.coli ATCC-25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-25923, Klebsiella pneumoniae (Lab culture), Proteus vulgaris (Lab culture).
