Objective: The present investigation is focused on detecting anti-carcinogenic potential of virgin coconut oil. Methods: The virgin coconut oil (VCO) from coconut endosperm was prepared by cold compression method. It was examined then for cytotoxicity by cell exclusion studies using trypan blue dye. Chemical carcinogenesis method using benzopyrene was used to study the anticarcinogenecity of VCO. Curcumin was taken as standard. The low dose and high dose VCO was compared with normal, vehicle and standard treatments. Biomarker studies and histopathological evaluation was also performed. Result: The VCO upto 9μl showed no significant cytotoxicity. The low dose (4ml/kg body wt) and high dose (8ml/kg body wt) of VCO had significant reduction in gastric Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, which is a biomarker for gastric cancer. Histopathological reports also showed very less infiltrations and absence of hyperplasia compared to control. Conclusion: The present study showed that, the virgin coconut oil have anti-carcinogenicity property, thus it prevent hyperplasia in the stomach of mice, induced by...

Background: The plant Hamelia patens belong to a family Rubiaceae, which is rich in active phytochemicals like flavonoids and alkaloids. Although Plant has been traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments still no systematic pharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological work has ever been carried out on this potential plant. Aim: The present study was carried out for the standardization and determination of in vitro antioxidant activity of the aqueous and methanolic extracts of aerial parts of plant Hamelia patens. Method: After the determination of all the standardization parameter, preliminary phytochemical analysis was done following various qualitative procedures for the determination of alkaloids, flavonoids, etc. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was performed for the determination of total phenolics by Folin-Ciocalteu method, total flavonoid by Aluminium chloride colorimetric assay and in-vitro antioxidant properties were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP method. Result: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, flavonoids etc. The highest amount of phenolic was found in the methanolic stem extract i.e. 236.22 mg of GA/g of extract...

Objectives: To obtain the data regarding the effects of sodium valproate on enhancement of monoamines mediated behavioural responses following administration of ECS for ten days to rats. Methods: Forty rats were selected for the study in which tonic-clonic seizures were developed fully after giving single maximal electroconvulsive shock (150V, 210mA). Four groups (n= ten in each) were received different treatment(duration= Ten days) 1) Control group- distilled water (2ml daily) 2) ECS pretreated group- single ECS daily 3) Valproate group- valproate suspension(5.4 mg/kg/day, p.o.) 4) Test group- Single ECS daily + valproate suspension one hour after ECS((5.4mg/kg/day, p.o.). Following behavioural studies were done on Day eleven – apomorphine induced stereotypy, lithium induced head twitches and clonidine induced sedation to study dopaminergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic functions respectively. Results: All Three scores i.e. apomorphine induced stereotypy; lithium induced head twitches and clonidine induced sedation were statistically significantly increased in ECS pretreated group as compared to control group. Apomorphine induced stereotypy score & lithium induced head twitches were statistically significantly decreased in test...

Background: Dengue is a major public health problem in resource-limited countries like India. There has always been a quest for best serological test for prompt and accurate diagnosis and whether single test or a combination be used. Enzyme immunoassays based on the detection of dengue virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1), and IgM antibody capture are available with different sensitivities and specificities observed in various settings. Aim: Diagnostic efficacies of two enzyme immunoassays, i.e. non-structural 1 (NS1) antigen-capture ELISA against IgM antibody capture ELISA to confirm cases of dengue infection in single acute serum samples have been evaluated and each test compared against the combination of the two. Material and methods: NS1 antigen (QUALISA Dengue NS1) and IgM capture ELISA (Calbiotech Dengue Virus IgM ELISA) were performed on 254 single acute serum and interpreted as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Results: The NS1 antigen detection and IgM antibody ELISA gave 25.59% and 17.3% positivity rates, respectively. The combination of two assays increased the overall detection rates to 30.7%. Noteworthy here is,...

In the present paper QSAR studies related to some novel substituted pyrazole derivatives are reported. All the compounds were evaluated for antmicrobial activity viz- antifungal activity against A. niger. Their reported antimicrobial activities were used for Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) studies to find correlation between different calculated molecular descriptor of the compounds and biological activity. It is reported that five compounds viz. A-2, A-6, A-7, A-10 and A-11 showed maximum activity against A....
