Objectives: To know the effects of chewing the fennel and cardamom seeds on plaque and salivary pH. Materials and Methods: 50 subjects (aged 18-60 years) attending V.S dental College and Hospital who gave consent to participate were recruited for this clinical study. Subjects were randomized in to two groups for chewing fennel and cardamom seeds. Salivary pH and plaque PH at baseline and immediately after chewing seeds for 5 minutes and after 10 min was measured using calibrated glass combination electrode and analysed by ANOVA. Results: The mean salivary PH scores at baseline, immediately and 10 minutes after chewing fennel seeds was 7.1, 7,3 and 7.5 (p value 0.001). The mean salivary PH scores at baseline, immediately and 10 minutes after chewing cardamom seeds was 7.4 , 7.6 , 7.76 (p<0.05). The mean plaque pH scores at baseline, immediately and 10 min after chewing fennel seeds was 7.4, 7.55, 7.53 (p value 0.001). The mean plaque pH scores at baseline, immediately and at 10 min after chewing cardamom seeds...

Microalgal like Chlorella vulgaris, being a unicellular green algae, is been widely studied for nitrogen and phosphorus removal and as potential feedstock for biodiesel production. This not only saves water from eutrophication but also becomes a good source of biodiesel. Hence, if two approaches are combined we can overcome the major challenge of both eutrophication and energy crisis. In the present study we have examined the effect of decreasing Nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in medium on growth, biomass and lipid content of C. vulgaris. Significant decrease in growth and biomass was observed with the decrease of nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in the medium from (1.5g/l to 0.0g/l) and (0.04g/l to 0.0g/l) respectively. Whereas the lipid accumulation showed reverse trend of increase when the concentration of both phosphorus and nitrogen where decreased in medium. At the same time, the effect of variation in pH and saline ranges on growth, biomass and lipid content of C.vulgaris were also evaluated. The growth, biomass and lipid content showed a significant difference due to...

Cipadessa baccifera (Roth.) Miq. of Meliaceae family, is an ethnobotanically important plant and is widely used in folklore medicine for treating a range of maladies including diabetes, dysentery, malaria, rheumatism, piles, head ache, and psoriasis. The present study was aimed at investigating the essential oil composition from the leaves of C. baccifera. The essential oil was extracted through hydrodistillation and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry technique (GC-MS). The yield of essential oil based on the dry weight of the plant was 1.1% (v/w). Forty one different phytoconstituents accounting for 99.62% of essential oil were identified. The study showed the presence of Sesquiterpenes as the major group of compounds representing 78.14% of the total essential oil. Significant Sesquiterpenes identified were Caryophyllene (17.32%), Isoledene (9.12%), 1S, Cis-Calamenene (7.42%) and β-Sesquiphellandrene(7.32%). Sesquiterpenes are known to exhibit pharmacological activities and the present report could contribute for their further use as anticancer, immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory...

The administration of atropine to a large population for treatment of intoxication carries the risk of allergic or toxic reactions in a small number of patients. It has been reported rarely in the literatures .We describe a cases of atropine-induced psychotic disorder in a substance abused patient and different approaches of management. Dryness of the mouth, blurred vision, photophobia and tachycardia commonly occur with chronic administration of doses. In addition psychotic symptoms such as restlessness and excitement, hallucinations, delirium may occur due to atropine. This is a study of a 55 year old female patient who manifested with visual and auditory hallucination, fatigue, anxiety, headache visual disturbances and chest tightness after intake of atropine. To manage this adverse drug reaction the dose of atropine was progressively reduced to 1ml/hr and 0.5ml/hr and discontinued after appearance of signs of complete atropinization. Patient was given with IV morphine 2 mg/hr to manage agitation and IV haloperidol 5mg as required to managing the psychiatric effects. Physostigmine, scopolamine or glycopyrrolate was given in some cases as replacement of...

Introduction: Researchers have shown variable prevalence of overweight & obesity among medical students. Aim: To assess the prevalence & determinants of overweight/obesity among undergraduate medical students. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out among 278 medical students at Kolkata from March 2015 up to May 2015 by filling a pre designed, pre tested structured questionnaire and doing anthropometric measurements. Results: 66% were between 20-21 years ; 58% were males; 54% were day scholars; 78 %were from nuclear family; 49% read in 2nd year;67% belonged to class I (modified BG Prasad scale March 2015);9% were obese & 19% were overweight as per WHO scale ; 28% & 20% were obese and overweight respectively as per Indian scale;1% male & 9% female had a waist circumference of more than 102 cm & 88 cm respectively (WHO scale);27% male & 30% female had waist circumference of more than 90 cm & 80 cm respectively (Indian scale);10% male & 21% female had a waist/hip ratio of more than0.90 & 0.85 respectively. The...
