Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is an abnormal fistulous tract that extends between the bladder and the vagina – thus allowing the continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault of the affected patient. This study evaluated presumptively the prevalence and antibiogram of pathogenic bacteria isolated from pre- and post-surgery VVF patients. Urine samples were collected in duplicates from the VVF patients; and these were bacteriologically analyzed using cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient (CLED) agar, MacConkey agar and blood agar. Susceptibility studies were carried out on the isolated pathogens using the disk diffusion method. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, S. pyogenes and S. aureus were the most isolated bacteria from the urine samples of pre- and post-surgery VVF patients. The organisms showed highest levels of resistance to ceftazidime, cotrimoxazole, amoxicillin, nitrofurantoin, cefuroxime, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and tetracycline. Zingiber cernuum belongs to family Zingiberaceae is a perennial herb, also called as Curved stem ginger. The rhizomes of Zingiber cernuum is steam distilled and the composition of essential oil was studied. The essential oil obtained was yellow in colour and the yield was about 0.007%. The chemical profile of the oil was obtained from their GC-MS analysis. The major components present in the oil are trans-Caryophyllene, α-Humulene and δ-3-Carene. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was studied using disc diffusion method. The essential oil was tested against four pathogenic stains of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The aim of the present study is to probe the antimicrobial activities of methanol leaf extract of Leucas sp. Antifungal susceptibilities of certain clinically isolated dermatophytes to methanol extracts of Leucas aspera and Leucas zeylanica leaves were performed using agar well diffusion method. The result obtained shows that all the extracts expressed remarkable antifungal activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 5 to 10mm. Maximum inhibition zone was recorded with Penicillium sp. (10 mm) while minimum inhibition zone of was recorded for Candida tropicalis (3 mm). To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Octenidine (OCT) 0.1%, Chlorhexidine (CHX) 0.2% against bacterial strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. The strains were inoculated in 7ml of brain heart infusion broth and diluted to reach the concentration equivalent (0.5 McFarland standard). 1ml of organism suspension was contacted with 1ml of each mouthwash and was removed at time interval of 3,5 and 10 minute and plated on Brain Heart Infusion agar. After 72 hours of incubation, colony counts were measured using stereomicroscope. Kruskal Wallis test was conducted on mean number of CFU.
