The aim of this study was to determine the anti-microbial and anti-adhesive properties of a Lactobacillus and Bacillus, against several micro-organisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Biofilm producing micro- organisms were isolated from different samples. The isolated micro-organism were characterized and identified. The anti-microbial and anti-adhesive activities were determined. The bacteroicin production was quantified and was observed. The maximum bacteroicin production was observed among various isolated micoorganisms. The bacteroicin produced by the Lactobacilli and Bacilli showed antimicrobial activity against pathogenic micro-organisms (including Pseudomonas, Escherichia col, Staphylococcus, Aspergillus and Salmonella typhi), the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were achieved for bacteroicins the most. The antagonistic characteristics of bacteriocin were studied by agar well diffusion method. Furthermore, the micro- organism showed anti-adhesive activity against most of the micro-organisms evaluated. Biofilm production was observed and quantified among various biofilm producing isolated micro-...

The aim of the present study is an attempt to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis on bacterial pathogens. The methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis were prepared and the antibacterial activity was determined by agar well diffusion method on different bacterial strains (Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., E coli., Staphylococcus sp. and Klebsiella sp.). Isolation and the purification of the antibacterial principle were carried out by using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The thermal stability of the extract was determined by incubating the extract at different temperatures. The methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish showed antibacterial activity on different bacterial strains. Of the five different species used, the bacterial species Bacillus were found to be more sensitive than all the other species. The bacterial strains Pseudomonas sp., Staphylococcus sp. and Klebsiella sp. were found to be moderately sensitive to the methanolic extract of the ink of cuttlefish. The species E coli is found to be least sensitive...

Synthesis of heterocylic compound has always drawn the attention of chemist over the years mainly because of their important biological properties. Particularly, the role of β–lactam which are endowed with unique structure and potent biological activity. The β-lactam heterocycles are considered as an important contribution of science to humanity since they have been constituents of living organisms, natural products, drugs and many more substances useful to mankind and society in all walks of life. Their synthesis and evaluation has always drawn the attention of biologists over the years. β-lactam, a four member heterocyclic compound involved in research aimed to evaluate new products that possess interesting biological activities. Natural and synthetic β-lactam derivatives occupy a central place among medicinally important compounds due to their diverse and interesting antibiotic activities and are still the most prescribed antibiotics used in medicine. The present review article focuses on the pharmacological profile of β-lactam with their potential activities. The ring system exhibits a wide range of activities like antimicrobial, antitubercular, anticancer, antidiabetic, tryptase and...

Metal oxide in the nanorange acquires distinctive properties that depend on size, chemical composition and surface chemistry. Among the metal oxide nanoparticles, the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are commonly used for their antimicrobial properties. ZnO nanomaterials are incorporated into a variety of skin coatings because of their antimicrobial and/or antifungal properties. Most of the future therapeutic applications of NPs are based on intravenous/oral administration. Experiments on their interaction with blood components especially erythrocytes are of immense importance, if the nanoparticles are to be administered intravenously. Haemolytic potential of ZnO NPs was assessed spectrophotometerically as well as by phase contrast microscopy. In our study, interaction of different concentrations of ZnO NPs with erythrocytes revealed absence of hemolysis by spectrophotometric method. On the other hand, phase contrast microscopic examination revealed concentration dependent clustering of erythrocytes. The detailed investigation about interaction of erythrocytes with ZnO NPs is needed before their clinical...

Lannea coromandelica (Anacardiaceae) is a tropical tree commonly called as Indian ash tree. Its various parts is said to possess medicinal property and used in Ayurveda and other ancient system of medicine for the treatment of various ailments including treatment of inflammation, gout, cholera, leprosy, vaginal troubles etc. Its Pharmacological study revealed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hypotensive, anticancerous activities. Leaves of Lannea coromandelica were collected from Azhagar malai, Madurai. The sample specimen of Lannea coromandelica was identified and authenticated by Dr. Jaya Raman, Taxonomist, Chennai. The present work was carried out to identify some of the phytocomponents present in the ethanolic leaf extract of the L. coromandelica by GC-MS technique, to ascertain the medicinal properties of the plant and also to assess its anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic potential of ethanolic leaf extract of Lannea coromandelica. The results revealed that ethanolic extract is mainly composed of oxygenated hydrocarbons and predominantly phenolic hydrocarbons. These different active phytochemicals may be responsible for wide range of activities, which may help in the protection against incurable diseases. The future in vivo investigation...
