Pollution have a serious impact on human health and environment. The incidences of various diseases are becoming prominent with the increase in rate of population. The diseases mainly include respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disorders, throat inflammation, skin infections etc. In the present study, widely claimed crude drug Dashamularishta, have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter aerogenes, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Trichophyton rubrum. Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of petroleum ether, chloroform, benzene, ethyl acetate and ethanol and distilled water extracts of Dashamularishta have been screened. Phytochemical screening recorded positive results for reducing sugar in all six extracts, terpinoids present in pet. ether, ethyl acetate, methanol and distilled water extract, Flavonoids present in ethyl acetate and distilled water, Tannin present in chloroform and methanol, saponins present in pet. ether, benzene, ethyl acetate and distilled water extract. Trypsin inhibitor (AATI) was purified from the seeds of Achyranthes aspera to homogeneity by conventional methods and its antimicrobial activity was tested on selected pathogenic microbes. The inhibitor significantly affected the growth of Proteus vulgaris followed by Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia with zones of inhibition recorded as 28mm, 26mm, 25mm, 20mm and 14mm respectively. No inhibition, however, was observed with Staphylococcus pneumonia strain. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of AATI supported that Proteus vulgaris and Bacillus subtilis were the most sensitive strains against the inhibitor. AATI did not differentiate gram positive and gram negative bacteria in its antibacterial activity. A total of thirty endophytic fungi were isolated from leaves and twigs of Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus citriodora. Among thirty endophytic fungal isolates, four (P3MT1, P3MT2, OP4MT2 and P7ML2) are consistently producing compounds which are inhibiting Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Mycobacterium smegmatis and Candida albicans even after 10 generations tested under dual culture, well diffusion and disc diffusion methods. P3MT1 and OP4MT2 are inhibiting even a filamentous fungi Penicillium chrysogenum. The fungal isolate OP4MT2 showed highest zone of inhibition (20 mm) against Penicillium chrysogenum among two test fungi. The crude ethyl acetate extract of P3MT1 isolate showed highest zone of inhibition against Candida albicans (19 mm) by both well and disc diffusion method when compared to other fungal isolates. Another four fungal isolates (P3ML1, P6MT1, P5MT1 and P2MT1) from the same set of thirty isolates showed positive for the secretion of amylase, protease and laccase enzymes in agar plate method. Methanolic extracts of two Indian medicinal plants Juniperus communis and Solanum xanthocarpum, were examined for their antimicrobial potential against selected bacteria and fungi. The purpose of screening is to justify and authenticate the use of Indian medicinal plants in ethno medicinal or folklore as traditional treasure to cure various ailments. In present investigations attempts were made to screen the Indian medicinal plants as antimicrobial agent. The extracts were tested against selected test bacteria and fungi through disc diffusion assay where Tetracycline and Mycostatin were used as standard. Indian medicinal plants have a traditional background that they have potentials to use as antimicrobial agents.
